The v1.4 Release Candidate was updated a few days ago. Please redownload and apply the update.
To avoid issues with Voobly changing "age2_x1.exe", use the following to get an "age2_x1.4.exe":

UserPatch v1.4 RC Installer
http://userpatch.aiscripters.net/download/rc/1.4/

The installer will automatically associate .mgx and .mgz files, so you can just browse to them in Windows Explorer, File Explorer, or My Computer, double-click them, and they will open directly in-game. Your rec files must be in the usual "SaveGame" folder for this to work. The v1.4 age2_x1.exe can open v1.4, v1.3, and v1.0c rec files in this way. After watching a rec, close the game and double-click the next one to watch it.

Installing to "age2_x1.4.exe" for Voobly Players
1. Extract "SetupAoC.exe" into your "Age of Empires II" folder.
2. Run "SetupAoC.exe" (admin privileges may be required).
3. Select the feature checkboxes to install (uncheck Port forwarding support).
4. Hold the Ctrl+Alt keys and click "Install".

More information can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=93911
Be sure to place the recs in the "SaveGame" folder before double-clicking them.

Oh, it might be related to this:

Rec Viewer Performance
For v1.4, performance for single player mode, the spectator system, and the rec viewer has been increased up to 3-5x, depending on the system. If, for any reason, you are experiencing poor performance, it may be related to the use of windowed mode. To disable windowed mode and use fullscreen mode like v1.0c, you can either use the "NOWND" shortcut parameter for "age2_x1.exe", or delete "wndmode.dll" in the "age2_x1" folder.

I have attached a picture of what my saved game files look like in my age of empires folder. at one point I could watch the replay by doing open with > age2_x1 (or was it age2_x1.4?), now its not working; Im not sure maybe a restart will help

when it opened the replay it did not have any of the voobly mods (or any mods at all, small trees, hd graphics, better farms, dark grey, etc...) going

I really want to be able to open these in voobly (host new game>begin at main menu>saved and recorded games) so I can view them with all of their fancy mods

but when I go into voobly that way the saved and recorded games button is greyed out and unpressable

could anyone be of assistance in this matter?

edit: I realize I have all the games in there twice? I saw two downloads from the game info page and wasnt sure of the differences

^update on the above

now, I uploaded some matches from the grandmasters tournament and they appear and work fine

so it must be that voobly isnt launching 1.4rc and therefore does not see them

If I can just figure out how to watch COT games in recorded then Ill be happy

Ok so I installed the patch linked in this thread as directed.. if I double click any of those files (recorded games) it goes to open AoC (great).. says it's loading the recorded game (AoC interface / background / font when it says that) - then it says the Age II expansion encountered an error and needs to close.... fml

oh.. and it never created a new .exe file for the v1.4 .. at least not that I can see.. not in the Age II directory where all the other exe's are...

Does this patch only work if we were using v1.3 already?? cuz I have no clue what version I have... could be 1.0c....??

If you used the Ctrl+Alt+Install method to get a separate age2_x1.4.exe, it would be next to your existing age2_x1.exe file. In a proper installation, they would both be inside the "Age of Empires II\age2_x1" folder. After installing the update, start a new game in single player mode to verify that all is well, your screen resolution is configured (important to check, especially on Windows 8), etc. After that, close the game, move your recs into the "SaveGame" folder, and double-click to open:
http://i.imgur.com/SvMA2KL.png

The patch should be able to install on v1.0b, v1.0c, v1.0e, or later. If you have a broken/corrupt base installation (downloaded from a strange source, etc.), then it may cause issues. After starting the game, you can click the Conquerors banner between "Learn to Play" and "Single Player" to check the version.
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5738/aok000x.png

The filename of the latest release is UserPatch.v1.4.20131231-100000.zip.
Please see the included readme for more details. Sorry for the trouble!

Ok my bad lol. I forgot where they keep the exe's (weird that it's a separate directory entirely and not the root folder of the game).

Anyway, so it did create a separate exe (great). But it still crashes 24/7. Exactly the same way. I've checked all versions / launchers of AoC I have, everything works fine. Still multiplayering on voobly just fine. Even the age2x_1.4.exe launches the game fine (though I haven't checked to see if I can play a skirmish match vs. the computer on it at all).

Anyway, once inside the v1.4 (which it says it is when I click that banner you mentioned) - if I go to saved and recorded games it, oddly, only shows the .mgz files and doesn't display the .mgx files (where if I launch the normal version of the game or FE, it only displays the .mgx files (and not the .mgz))

Either way, when I try to play one of the .mgz recordings from inside the game (v1.4) it crashes instantly - the same way it does if I double click a .mgz or .mgx file in the savegame directory.

Oh, and the patch you linked me in your reply is the exact one I downloaded (straight from the link at the top of this thread - 1st post I think).

I'm running Windows Vista if it makes a difference. Technology also hates me.. if that makes a difference. :P

fml.

Let's ignore recs for a moment and see if the game can actually start normally. Questions:
1. Did you install the game from your retail CDs?
2. What folder is it installed to? ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II", etc.)
3. Is this a laptop computer with a dual GPU (integrated intel + nvidia/amd graphics)?
4. Are you playing in windowed mode or fullscreen?
5. What screen resolution is your desktop set to?

Please confirm your game resolution in the main menu options. After that, try to start a single player game against computer players and let me know what happens. If it crashes, please pastebin the crash report.

You can get a crash report by following these steps:
1. run "eventvwr.msc" (Event Viewer) from the start menu
2. on the top-left of the Event Viewer window, select Event Viewer->Windows Logs->Application
3. on the top-center, you'll see a list of events (Information, Error, Warning, etc.) sorted by time
4. find and select the Error event that matches the time of your game crash
5. copy the information shown at the bottom of the window and paste it here

Random google image of the Event Viewer: click here

An example:
Faulting application name: age2_x1.exe, version: 0.7.26.809, time stamp: 0x3b7433ec
Faulting module name: age2_x1.exe, version: 0.7.26.809, time stamp: 0x3b7433ec
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00163dd5
Faulting process id: 0xa04
Faulting application start time: 0x01ce285e99d00724
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe
Report Id: 35fb48bd-9452-11e2-93b0-4c72b9035dae
As for showing rec files, yes, in-game, you'll only see mgz format recs while in v1.4. The same should apply to Forgotten Empires, so if you see mgx files listed while playing AoFE, your installation is probably corrupted. Despite showing only mgz in-game, you can still double-click them from the SaveGame folder to open mgx files with v1.4 (it will switch itself to v1.0c to open them).

Hey.. my god sorry for huge delay in response: was out of the country on xmas vacay with the fam.

Holy &*@%%$ that's a lot of technical stuff :P. Forgive me, I'm not even close to as computer savvy as you obviously are but I'll do my best to give the information you requested. In order,

1. Did you install the game from your retail CDs?

No. I don't have AgeII HD or anything. I did buy the game a decade ago when it came out but couldn't find the install CDs or anything from so long ago so I downloaded and installed from the internet. Can't remember if it was cracked or just free game cuz it was so old or whatever.. definitely a lot of patches and stuff installed with it tho (force desktop res. in game, map packs, online patches, pussywood etc. etc.)

2. What folder is it installed to? ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II", etc.)

Yes that. :P
Exactly that path.

3. Is this a laptop computer with a dual GPU (integrated intel + nvidia/amd graphics)?

Ahahah.. ahhh.. now you're makin me look bad.
Yes, it IS a laptop.
dual GPU? I have no clue.. don't think so though. I did a google search to see if I could learn how to find out and what I was "told" was to run "dxdiag" and check the left panel of the display tab or, alternatively, to open device manager and expand the display adapter drop down.

In dxdiag the information displayed was as follows:

Name: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip Type: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 1759 MB
Current Display Mode: 1366 x 768 (32 bit) (60 Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

DirectDraw Acceleration: Enabled
Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled
AGP Texture Acceleration: Enabled

Notes: No Problems Found.

In device manager it simply said: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

so I'm guessing NOT dual GPU? but either way hopefully that helps?

4. Are you playing in windowed mode or fullscreen?

Fullscreen. (Yay! Easy one!)

5. What screen resolution is your desktop set to?

1366 x 768 (wish I could make it bigger for better gameplay)

Please confirm your game resolution in the main menu options.

1024 x 768 (middle resolution)

In 1.4 I notice it has many other display options.. it is set to 1366 x 768 right now (desktop resolution).

After that, try to start a single player game against computer players and let me know what happens.

Did this as part of my own testing already. Have played entire single player skirmish matches against the computer.. haven't tried campaign at all though if that matters? Game runs fine in skirmishes for all versions / launchers I have installed EXCEPT 1.4. When I tried on 1.4 the game crashed instantly...

As for the crash report stuff I assume that was intended for my use if the game crashed when trying to run single player? This is that crash report:

The crash is at the same address each time. At least it's a consistent problem (better than random lol).

Please screenshot the following, in order to confirm the game setup:
1. your Main Menu options screen
2. the single player game setup screen (where you pick game options, etc.) before starting
3. your "Age of Empires II\Data" folder in this view (be sure to capture all the dates, etc.)
4. your "Age of Empires II\Games" folder, if it exists (it would exist if you have aofe, etc.)

Finally, please reinstall v1.4 with "Windowed mode support" checked and see what happens.
If you have time, please visit the support chat and we can look into things directly.

Glad to hear there's a bright side in here somewhere :P.

Ok so unfortunately my computer doesn't seem to like me taking screen shots in game for some reason?? The screenshot comes out completely black with some colour in there barely.. you can barely make out the banner in the background / outlines of some of the fields / buttons etc. Doesn't really help us.

SO:

Here's your info! :P

Main Menu Options Screen (just the right side of the screen, I'm sure you know where the single player button / MSN zone button / banner are etc. on the left half of the screen):

Having typed all that out I just realised I'm an ***** and I could just take a picture of the screen with my cell and email it to myself.. so I did that. Those pictures can be found here:

The other two screenshots you asked for can be found here:

I am posting this now but I will reinstall 1.4 with windowed mode support enabled in a few minutes and I will post back the results.

OOOOOkkkk

SO.. it seemed to get farther this time (I uninstalled first btw.. then checked windowed mode and Ctrl+Alt reinstalled).

Anyway, it still crashed lol.

here's the screenshot (cuz it almost looked like it was gonna work - actually started loading the in-app graphics before crashing):

However it still crashed.. and here is the crash report from this one (just in case):

Thanks for the screenshots. It looks like a few files in the installation have been modified.

Please capture a screenshot of your Data folder's compatibility files:
- return to your "Age of Empires II\Data" folder
- click the "Compatibility Files" button on the command bar next to "Organize", "Burn", etc.
- screenshot the files in the folder that appears

Also, try to run the game as admin (right-click age2_x1.4.exe, select "Run as administrator") and see what happens. In addition, try setting the resolution to 800x600 and see if it works there. Sorry for the trouble!

ohhhhh my goddddd....

Now I feel like SUCH a COMPLETELY retarded @$$hole.....

I can't believe I didn't think to run it as administrator. I am SO sorry for the trouble... DUH you have to run every launcher as administrator.. I guess just because it had been so long since I'd initially installed / I install patches all the time but they don't come with their own launcher..?

I'm making excuses.. I'm an *****. I am so sorry.. thank you SO much for takin the time to go through all that with me..

I changed the properties of the launcher to "run as administrator" by default and tried again with the recordings.. single player skirmish match.. recs.. mgx.. mgz.. everything's working perfectly. FML.

If you're interested, here's the screenshot you asked for?? :P (and I didn't bother changing the screen resolution cuz I want it higher, not lower, as it is, and everything's working without touching the screen res.. hope you don't mind :P

Screenshot of "compatibility files" in Data Directory:
http://i.tinyuploads.com/mVb7uV.jpg

GOD I'm so dumb!
Honestly, the second I read "could you please try running as administrator" in your post I was like ".... ohhhh fml".
I'm so dumb.. so sorry for the trouble and thanks again so much. FML :P
