That is a title of a recent scientific paper that just came out.
Might be of interest to some of the top aoe2 players who are full time aoe2 or want to be full time aoe2!
Small background
As some of you may remember me from a lot of years ago, I used to stream and play some aoe2 here and there, but then I quit to pursue university and other life stuff.
Well I got a degree in psychology and currently getting my masters in Sports science and basically work as a researcher.
Thus I read a lot of scientific papers.
Now this one is quite interesting, it came out just recently and looks at lifestyle factors of top e-sport players.
They basically looked at various factors like sleep quality, nutrition they eat and physical activity.
To no surprise, e-sport players suck at that.
They found that their nutritional intake is lacking compared to reccomended (not enough vegetables, a lot of sugars etc. I think you all can imagine the typical esport player diet.)
They also , to no surprise, were less physically active as they should. Physical activity is linked to higher cognition, especially high intensity exercise.
They also tested their cognitive scores with a cognitive test.
As expected, worse sleep was related to worse cognition. Yeah the trend line is not super big, but at the highest level each % matters.
There are more graphs, but I will leave it at that.
In conclusion. They tested various lifestyle aspects and found that nutrition intake was not optimal, as well as physical activity was way too low. Sleep hygiene was also not ideal. They also found that worse nutrition and worse sleep is associated with worse cognitive function.
So the takeaway is this:
If you want to maximize your performance, getting your sleep/physical activity/nutrition in check might be important and beneficial to your performance.
If anyone wants a more in-depth look, give me a message.
