We could give it a try... With scenarios it's already possible, but unfortunately random mirror maps are not possible yet, but CondoM is going to pay twenty australian dollars to the first one who make this feature.
Guys if you want symmetrical maps go play sc2 and even if equal maps are created noone wont play them becouse bad maps are a part of aoc or aoc would just be a generic RTS game
Reactivating this topic, because they testet it.
Would be nice to here the experience from @TheViper and @_MbL_
I think you need less scounting on mirror maps. You dont need to know where the ressources are. Just what the enemy is doing. Therefore you are able to plan you lame or trush without scouting for the enemy at all. I think that takes a bit from the game.
On the other hand you have a perfectly fair map.
I would have no problems if that is used for maps where there is no early game. Like Arena or Fortress.
If there shall me mirror: in my opionion the better solution for maps, where ealry aggression is normally possible, would be: Mirror terrain and wood but random generate the other res. That would give both players the same map in case of open space, but will not show where the other res are. The enemy position is still kind of revealed.
I dunno if that would be possible.
I think one of the best things about Age2 is the random map generation. I used to play a lot of C&C (RA1, ZH, C&C3 and RA3) and other then RA1 all of them used pre made maps and the games got very uninteresting very fast. If there was a way to automatically generate mirrored maps it may be fine but playing with a bad map and a map disadvantage is a skill and yes it could be more "fair" to play with mirrored maps but I don't think it would actually make the game more fun.
I saw that with the HC3 maps, they generated almost the same every time (espacally Cup, Pants, Cross, Slopes and Hightide) and by the end of the qualifier I was already sick of them.
Random map generation is essential to aoe2's uniqueness and longevity, taking that away would be a huge mistake.
Edit: instead we should put effort in getting more attention/resources for Random Map Scripting functionality; this would enable the community to assist in making fair. yet random ie. non-mirror but competitive, non-bugged random maps.

I agree. Same with maps were one Civ had a clear advantage and you have mirror matches all the time. Memb was predicting it and he was right. If you have so many games you might need two sets of maps. On the other sides the players tend to choose always the same maps.
What's the discussion here? Testing mirror maps to have them in ranked or tournaments? Am I be wrong but I always thought that this game was all about making decisions watching all of your resources and skills at the reach of your hand. Analyzing the map you have but also your opponent.
I think it would become something monotony. But it's true that also comes to my mind every huns war that was sometimes like a mirror game so fun to watch.
I think in the other hand that it would be great for practice between members of the same team.
