Being experienced when it comes to streaming, setting up streams, and helping others do so, I will add that if you have a i5 laptop and about 1 mb - 1.5 mb, I will tell you from experience that it is best for you to stream at 480p.
Streaming at 720p or higher will really hurt your laptop. I will explain why in a bit.
if you have a i3 desktop (big different between laptop and desktop when it comes to streaming.)
I have seen results of streaming from a i3 computer @3.1 Ghz or so and from a i5 laptop @2.4 Ghz or so.
Unless you have upload speed higher than 2 mb upload speed, your equipment is what matters. Your preset will be set to very fast, because if you go slower, you are now hurting your computer. Even at 1 - 1.5 mb upload speed, you do not want to go at the preset of super fast or higher, because your internet connection is't strong enough to provide your great quality. Your screen will be "refocusing" a lot.
This is what happens when you do otherwise:
For a i5 laptop @ around 2.4 ghz @ 4gb
Your stream will be fine
BUT here's the catch, expect to be needing new equipment for streaming. That's right, after a while say for like around a year, a year and a half... It will start having heating problems likely, this will greatly reduce the performance of the computer and may even burn up your graphics card and such.
So for laptop: 480p Or 720, if you plan to get a new computer in about 2 years.
For a i3 desktop @ around 3.1 ghz @ 8gb (I believe)
Your stream will also be fine.
What's the catch? Well, because it's a desktop and not a laptop, you will not suffer as much as the laptop.
Do not set the preset too slow, you will be putting pressuring your computer, it will also decrease the performance of your computer as it is not an i7. As this is a desktop and not a laptop, and it is at 3.1 ghz and better than the laptop in that sense, you can set it to the preset to fast.
Notice the ram also. 4 gb is the minimum, 6 gb is ok, 8 is good. 16 is perfect, anything higher is brilliant. :P
Do not try crazy settings unless you have an i7. Know that. Do not try out crazy settings unless you are using an i7.
Upload speed should be around 75% of your upload speed, but it’s best to put it less than 75%.
For example, say you have an upload speed of 1.5 or so. Just stick with 1000, instead of 1100.
Side note: If you are using xSplit, do not use the max quality of 10. <.< Stick to 8 or 9, give your computer some leisure.
