Earlier than that too. I had quit in fall 2002, and I remember him being the top DMer for the couple years I played back then. I always wondered if he still played it where he would rank, maybe we will get to see.

He seems about 1900ish now just from playing with him in TGs. Not saying he cant get his old level back but it'll take a lot of effort and practice on his part if he chooses to do so.

He's been one of the best almost since the beginning of aoc I guess.

There was a DM tournament that I don't remember him being in on MFO back in 2000 (RD_ChampioN beat _reznor in the final), but after that I think he was generally considered as the best dmer. I don't know when the other good dmers came along (Jidba, Glenn, Dane, etc), but Lance was definitely considered the best for a while. Then he crossed over to RM and did quite well for himself as well.

Edit: There was also a guy called MaJoR_Jose or something. He always talked himself up as the best, and had high rated nicks but I don't know if he was a point trader or what, as I never really followed dm.

Well being of that era I guess I can shed some light.

Lance was the strongest between 2003-04 before he finally moved to RM.
Lance is one of a few players to master both RM/DM to a very high level a decade or more ago.
RD_ChampioN (days of the ssibal; was Arch Kovens real life friend and he too was a very strong player, mastering both RM and DM.
Ralber is probably the last of a forgotten era to pass over from RM to DM with his nick poZ_Steven where he had some great games vs Jidba.
Lance was a top gamer; a real macro god in DM old skool days when most were slow nooblets.
Lance perfected a very good set of tactics that he still evidences today if you watch those games. He always had a very quick grasp on the map / quick eco.
Jidba lost a lot to Lance and despite being already very strong as he rose the ranks on Argonaut_Jidba, I would argue he learnt a lot from Lance. There were some epic games between the two, one of the most memorable being a teutons war on a map where there's a lake in the middle and you have land going round it in a circle, can't remember map name.
Lance's best rm game 1v1 that I saw was vs CNS_Yanzi. I think you can still find that game in one of Lance's gamepacks somewhere.
Then I noticed Lance switched to BF after that with 2v2 sling-shot type games.
Jidba eventually came to excel beyond what Lance achieved and I would argue Jidba is the greatest of all time alongside Lance because both have superb concentration and focus. Both are so consistent.
However Jidba's level is the longest reigning and he has held the throne for years until people like Viper give it a go and fierce competition between the elites flares up.
RD_ChampioN won pG_Lance in an epic and very long 1v1 huns war, both players having the upmost respect for each other, RD_ChampioN always confessing "no you are the best andy " etc.
That was the last they played that I saw. Back in the days when Lance used to spam farms with like 17 mills around them (no joke).
As for Jose_M he was overrated but a good player for his day, like a Sam_Deathwalker birthing something new... Jose just saw the popularity (or how he would claim he invented) in archery range/pala starts/pushes and coined "red army" as he would always play in that colour. He had a 2400 nick before knowing he had outlasted his skills and traded the nick down trying to prove he wasnt a man but in fact a little girl /norespect.

Hehe. Well I was 11 years old when I used to play AoE1. I was too late for pre-expansion AoE online, so I only knew RoR.

I have always played Deathmatch for as long as I can remember. Phanlanx units with mass rax and the clinking sound they made with spear and shield: awesome.

I met players I really admired there, which was always the catalist for me to improve.

I was the type of player who loved messing around like "no attack until 20 minutes" and then have an epic catapult war. Cav archers were the best, shooting dead straight arrows!

But I wasn't known what-so-ever in RoR.

Then AoE2 was announced and my brother being 3 years older than me found (on our 486 PC) screenshots off the internet of the game... it took ages to load. I remember this one screenshot. It was really zoomed in because of the resolution, so you picked up on all the detail of the leaves on the feudal age stable. I saw the grooves on the walls and thought maybe you could run units along it.

Anyway that never happened, obviously.

So then it was released and online Deathmatch at MSN Zone for DM was teaming with life.
I remember my first online game. It seemed like chaos. People making masses of the heaviest units, from the Frank Axemen pwning Town Centres so fast to Paladin masses overwhelming... this... this was exciting.
So the first popular map in AoE2 online was Gold Rush and BF. I used to play a lot of Gold Rush. As you can imagine there were clans popping up all over the place. MSN Zone didn't support clan functionality like Voobly so you could literally just create a name with the clan tag and say you were in it. Ofc the community was so big then that either no one cared, or you got outted as a fake.

Chat used to be 24/7 spam with peak times for me in the UK being when I got home from school. Spam was like JOIN GAME 24 GOLDRUSH INTERS AND EXPERT.

Rated was like this other world beyond non rated that I perceived as this place where serious people played and didn't have much fun.

Prolly best to tell this from my own PoV.

So back at that time I befriended two people: Spock and K1LLa. K1LLa wasn't known by that name then... it was another name beginning with M like Magicsomething I don't know, that part of my memory fails me. Anyway Spock was from the Netherlands and K1LLa was from Ireland. At the time my zone nick was Master_Conflict. As a trio we started playing some team games, altho Spock was more of K1LLa's friend so I played much more with him. Shortly after meeting, K1LLa joined DEATH clan, creating the nick "_SuDDeN_DEATH_". He was already known on AoE2 non rated as a force to be reckoned with, and all I wanted to do was join the clan. After a while I was forgotten and he progressed on in games called Super Duper Experts and I went back to playing Teutons in 1v1 and having fun building stables in a line with bombard towers behind to stop rushes.

One day K1LLa joins and beats this in some Frank rush (his favourite civ) and says wtf, basically, and tells me I need to learn DM properly if I wanna be expert. So I start playing and learning from him.
Unfortunately he was an excellent team player, unfortunate because he could tell you to the letter what to do and build so when you started getting known and went to 1v1 and lost like an *****, people would post it on MrFixItOnline (MFO).

So anyways me K1LLa and Spock formed MaLiCiOuS (a clan K1LLa proposed after reading the word and liking it from a Harry Potter book!).

As a three and largely under K1LLa's leadership we championed game after game. There were some additions to this story, there was a 3v3er known as Orni who I believe (but don't quote me) later became MaJoR_rEvEnGe. He used to kill pocket when he was pocket and anyway at the time it rocked, like when K1LLa used to rush people on Goldrush instead of go for the gold and kill everyone before they knew what had happened.

I first met Lance when he was known as RdT_Lancelot. He was ok and had his own group but I remember we had a MaLiCiOuS vs. RdT clan battle and we won RdT, me personally beating Lance with brits by flanking with rax/longbow. He was pretty easy. In rated terms Lance was about 1550 rated and I was about 1650, Spock near enough the same and K1LLa was 1900. Yeah, his rushes at the time were godly. Very smart guy. He's a barrister in RL now.

Anyway his moto was kill them in 8 minutes or don't kill them at all. His micro was sick. Rushes intense.
K1LLa and I went 2v2 and, tho not many people know, were the best 2v2ers of AoK. We won everyone. The best 2v2 players of AoK played Per war and at the birth of the clump being used full time thanks to the popularising by Sam_Deathwalker, it became a great civ not to be reckoned with. But we won them, the best 2v2ers of AoK.
Then AoC was born. On our MaLiCiOuS nicks, me V1LLa, Spock Z1LLa and Joe K1LLa we embraced it (well embraced it alongside Diablo2). There was a lot of people saying on AoE2 that Diablo will take a lot of players away from AoC, and it did. I played D2 and AoC but probably more D2 to begin with. When I returned back from D2, I loved Huns but K1LLa was stuck in the past and couldn't move past Frank war 1v1. Hell I even remember when market strats were born in Franks, long before huns came along.

I followed a different path and while K1LLa went Mayans I went Huns. Maya war was very popular, as popular as Huns. You needed to be good in both really, if you could. Maya war in rated was like Franks. You could rush someone and kill house vills and follow up with a very strong ranged castle unit and make castles all on their front. Lets not mention market too! But that was considered high risk versus any decent rusher.

So lets take a snapshot if the zone as a whole. The year is 2000. Arch Koven is making a name for himself in RM. Maimin matty, sherrif, cpt kidd, these guys are still big names. MaJoR clan isn't born yet. IYIiK doesn't exist. CNS_Grunt, _IamKmkm, RD_ChampioN etc are around. Speak of WCGs is around, a 50K tournament is on the horrizon. MSN Zone has moderators. Yes, in DM too. There are invitations going out to 32 countries. Games with single elim being played out in lobbies. There is something known as incompletes. The standard ping is 800. People are playing on 56K modems but cable is becoming a reality. Everyone has screens the size of houses. 500MHZ PCs are standard, people boasting 800 and 1000MHZ PCs! TGs can be a nightmare. There's nothing enforced for refusing to save. You lose all your points after 5 incompletes (the amount you should of lost). A high number and low game amount meant people tried to avoid you. There was something known as drop tricking and syncing... these were real things that baned everyone... but here I end the history lesson.

Next time I'll talk about the birth of famous clans, some great and forgotten players, my own notority and of course pG_Lance rising to fame. I will also tell you about the forgotten _illusioNs, one of the best DMers to grace old skool DM.

Lance once told me, that he started playing Age of empires by playing BF DM 1v1. Then he moved to Arabia and took the no1. But he was so much better than anyone with a siege onager civ.. his micro with trebs and siege onager (specially trebs) was far beyond any other player. you still can see this in some BF / Michi games.

you re saying that he was no1 until 2004, Im not sure about that.
But he kept on playing DM for the WCL times (until 2005-2006), maybe without this domination as before.

neverless he was THE top RM teamplayer at those times.. aoc was not as today, when all tactics and stuff is explored yet.. he had always good ideas, for example on semi water maps etc (always a "big" eco style). I remember him creating monks in a german 1v1 islands tournament vs knights.

We were like "wtf is he doing".. nobody thought about using monks in this way.. at those times, you always made like 2 baracks after seeing that you was landed with stables.

good, old msn zone...
my first online game was a FFA with 3 people (11) where one won both of us with doing conqus only... i didnt even know that unit before since i played only Aoe1 (later Rise of Rome) offline and AoK with a friend over LAN.
Since i played with 56k modem my account had around 150 incompletes (i droped everytime when my family did a phone call 11), so my rate was around 1350^^
It was really hard to get some recs / buildorders these times, even to know who are good players. there was no aoczone and katsuni around 11 Some day (around 1year later) i found bskzone where the community was until then i played only my own wired strats like pop 19 mongol tower rush 111

There was a german zone these times called "Masters" where many Teamgames were played.. And there you could find Andy with +20 streak and 300 points above all Tsu-Players (Shine, Cortes, Savage, Nilpferd, etc)

Ok so chapter 3.

It's the fall of 2000 and you could paint completely different pictures of both RM and DM. Both had their own greats but they were really distinct from each other. Yes very early on in DM, just before/around the same time as _reznor, koven graced DM..only for a little while. I remember him playing DM on a map that wasn't arabia but it was clear land between him and his opponent and him picking up Huns and building like 16 stables and then a massive on-rush of everything else he could possibly muster and throwing it at his opponent, who lost...miserably. Koven confessed he was at the time simultaneous no.1 on DM and RM. But I don't think he was, if he was it was for about a week to a month, max.

The original ladder was a shared RM and DM ladder. Koven had some god-like 2500 rating and there were recorded games of him vs Devils_skater at around about this time. He had between 130-160 wins and a very finite number of losses, like 13-15.

L_Clan_Chris was a prodigy when it came to playing in WCG at such a young age (think he was 14?) - you can find out exactly how old if you read some of the old interviews (two of which I placed at the bottom of this post but it doesn't include the one with Chris because I can't find the page I am looking for !><)

Arch_Koven bowed out of WCG because I believe he was recruited in the army, but I could be wrong. I was wrapped up in the DM scene at the time, so someone can always correct me on that. I do know that the (then) current greats of RM were all playing while Arch_Koven was away, and seeing some of the recorded games of him winning victory after victory after victory against them when he returned, then having an interview asking him 'how did you beat all the best experts when you had just returned?', to which he replied, 'I watched a few games from each player, studied their strategy and then devised a way to beat them'. Can't argue with that!

Personally it would of been the icing on the cake if Arch_Koven had won the WCG final. But he admitted that Grunt was very strong, and he remembered a time before he was trained up, when he wasn't. Both players received training from other people, though. Arch_Koven said that he played for a year straight to get as good as he did, day and night, sacrificing sleep to be the best... couldn't rest until he was number one. He was sponsored by Samsung though and got money for attending tournaments, so I guess he could take it that seriously. The last I heard of Arch_Koven was back in 2005~ when someone was asking after him and I recall someone saying he was very successful in Korea, but had moved to FPS games. I guess now he'd be like what... 36?

Anyway, back to DM.

So as you moved into 2001, Path and Heavyboy aka Burchery founded MaJoR clan. It's inside info (I'm not sure if I was told in secret), that MaJoR actually fixed the interview between themselves and MFO in that they wrote it to help with their own status. However, regardless of the exact detail, it fulfilled it's objective and OMG did I want to join MaJoR clan.

IYIiK (Made in Korea) was also set for a 2001 debut, with people like IYIiK_keymouse, IYIiK_Jagger and the like...
IYIiK_Jagger was a great name and Jagger was well known in the DM community. He created the name DruNkeN_SharK and absolutely sodding pwned. He occupied some 2400 rating on the DM scene with a finite number of losses. I absolutely adored playing against him because it was so much fun. He wasn't an all out rusher, so you felt like you had a chance to dominate the map. Originally a mayan's player, Jagger came to Huns and brought a style never seen in DM, and never seen since. He would begin like most DMers, then it all went weird. Blacksmiths were used... regularly you saw a build order like this: 3 stable, rax...archery range... a MILL. What the ****? A mill?

Yes ladies and gentlemen, he would way point his town centre to a mill with 4 farms around it, ready to be build. When created, that was his eco. I'm not even kidding.

And you think this is at a time going through 2002-03 that surely great players would clean house with this guy. No. I remember a post by SuNo_Daywalker (Dan) asking how to beat him because he "had no eco". Yes he had figured out that most of the best players had invested a lot of time and energy into raid micro, and figured if he didn't have an eco, but had superior/god like army control, he could best them. And he did. He would allow you to lay roots all over the map, and then with a few fast executed fell swoops, you lost it all.

The blacksmiths were used as defense. Around his wood cutters. To stop you getting at them. Yes, I know, go figure.. but it worked.

Ok ok so it's all old skool this stuff wouldn't work now, or would it? 5 castles around your base as huns, surely not? But it was impressive and it had the best players fearful to try...

Personally, for me, looking back, all I wanted as I said earlier was to be in MaJoR clan. A lot of people said at the time that I was an 'unofficial' MaJoR because I left a few months after MaJoR had peaked. I got into the clan just as the interview was released. There were 21 official MaJoR members at the time, and the interview was titled something to the effect of 'MaJoR, no.1 clan on AoC Deathmatch'. So clearly I was exhausting everything to get in, but I wasn't good enough. So how did I make it?

So there I am, thinking of ways. Burchery was a nice guy... He would sit in rooms on his BritneySpears name and host trials. Path was a founder and they had a website and everything, "mess with the best, die like the rest" moto with a blue paladin zoomed in when you visited the page. Wasn't amazing, I mean it didn't have forums, but it was a base; we had a website.. Well, they had a website. I had jack **** at the time.

So I befriended this guy who, funnily enough and hardly anyone will know this, was Rd. Yes, we were a pair. Kd and Rd. Before the names came about, we just had our own nicks, but with me wanting into MaJoR as much as him, he saw it as a challenge. I say he because I only knew him for a very brief time and unfortunately his memory is lost in the nether at the back recesses of my brain.

So he asked Burchery for a 1v1. An intense mayan war took place, but it didn't last all that long. My new found friend lost. Did we get in...?

Impressed, Burchery accepted him. But there was a catch. My friend wouldn't let up. Either I got in too, or forget it. What a move, thinking back. It was a sought after spot in a clan and he could of just accepted and left me high and dry. After all, who was I?

He persisted and Burchery let over. "Okay", he said "your friend can join too".

Now shortly before this, I might add, Kd and Rd names were already founded. We made the nicks _2000_Rd and _2000_Kd in respect of the millennium. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULTtWUZhD9c cracking song. Used to listen to it around this time. My friend pressured me to come up with them, so I just pulled them out of my ass.

They had no meaning. It didn't mean "Kid" or anything like that, it was just a nickname I would use for a while... so I thought.

Getting into MaJoR meant we imported those names across and made MaJoR_Rd and MaJoR_Kd.

Now here the story goes a bit weird. Rd got in a fight with some of the MaJoR members (verbally of course) and left. I didn't see him for 6 months. He returned and msged me and told me he had been put in jail and had only just gotten out, but that he might go back!!! What the hell! A few days and he was gone. Forever.

So, I was in MaJoR. What did I do? The only thing I could do, I sparred with MaJoR_DiaI3o. Yes I got the privilege. Kinda. He was a good player, but a drop tricker/trader, too. He wanted that jump from 1900 to 2K, as 2K meant something back then. Really, it did. But I beat DiaI3lo after a few weeks training and he was distraught. At first I thought I would NEVER beat him. But I did.

Still not known, I made a side-nick "Differentiate". This was shortly after/around the time I made the nick DooIYI_OwNz_YoU - the maximum number of characters you could have on the zone, 15. Yeah someone had this clan called OwNz_YoU. Cool, huh? A lot of things get forgotten over the years.

Anyway this name Differentiate was like 1800 in not too many games, a bit like my IYIiK_Radical nick I made (yeah I got into IYIiK, too), but only for a short time. Aaacctually my friend got in, and I smurfed the nick up. Anyway anyway, on this nick Differentiate I fought vs Prodigal_Wood, aka Mate. I won. I didn't know really the significance of this, until I got ZMs flying at me. OMG YOU WIN MATE? The game was posted and I got a lot of fame from that. I was actually in the spotlight off my own steam for once.

My journey went on from there and I graced many good players, having sparred against pretty much all that have ever lived and played on AoC DM. I made nR_England nick and got my record to 2K rating (when 2K meant something) with 29 wins, no losses. I beat SuNo_Daywalker for that 2K, then he took it away from me :evil:

I will end it here for now, but tell me if you'd like to know more. So much more I could... but takes time to write it. Just to finish, there was a kid whose name I forget now. When I was 14 he was around a similar age and he died of cancer after less than a year playing AoC DM on MSN Gaming Zone. This was at a time when AoC was revolutionary and D2 was on the horrizon. I spare a moment for that guy, who was talked about a lot on MSN Zone at the time of his death, and a lot of tributes were posted on MFO. To him, I spare a thought. Sounds less meaningful to say "whoever you are", but to be taken at that time, and that age... unforgettable in my memory!
