She won, at the weekend, an international Age of Empires 2 championship against the best players from all over the planet and earned about $1,000. And it is not the first time that Ana Gabriela Lopes dos Santos, known as @__Gabi within AoE2, took some titles home as well as at Queen’s Clash last Sunday (14).
"My brother introduced me to the game when I was very young," explains Gabi, who spoke with Mais Esports to tell more about her trajectory. "We started with Age 1 when I was around 9 years old and then there were several expansions of the game over time until it reached Age of Empires II Definitive Edition, which is what we currently play. However, nowadays, I am better than my brother who taught me to play", she jokes, complementing with that iconic "rs".
Currently, Gabi lives in Brasília and is studying Veterinary. From 2019 until now, she has won four international titles in the Age of Empires 2 women's championships. Besides, of course, a showmatch in which she beat six rivals @Lavie_Head, from Belarus, who also won in the final race for the Queen's Clash.
It also reached the 1939 in-game rating, which currently places it among the top 400 players worldwide.
"I always won the last tournament very easily and this one was different, because we had several high level players, such as @OfeliaAoE, Lavie_Head and @ashleylynn, who are well known players in the age community but who had not participated in any tournament until then", explains.
For her, it could crown her as the best female player in the world of Age of Empires 2. At least so far.

One of the interesting things for her is the union with the other players on the scene. "We have a group called Age of Queens that brings together all the girls in the Age community. There we discussed and exchanged ideas about events and tournaments to strengthen the entry and progress of more women in the game," she explains.
"The biggest challenge was to break the prejudice of men, because contrary to what many think, I was not supported at first because I was a woman and played games", she reports. "I suffered a lot of prejudice, doubted the fact that I was really a woman, or even played a joke saying that I should be cleaning the house instead of playing. However, nowadays, I showed that a woman can really play well and enter the competitive scenario in games, reconciling with her professional life", she completes.
In addition to the barrier around video games being a player, strategy games have other difficulties for players to join. "Generally, strategy games require more time and more dedication to learning. In short, gameplay is more difficult and not all women have the patience or time to learn", she explains.
However, she is happy with the openness of the community itself when someone wants to learn.
"I'm very happy that the Age of Empires community is growing every day, nowadays we even have our space for Brazilians to be able to make forums in Portuguese on the Aoezone.com website, which was exclusively all in English. I want to highlight the amount of friends that I will take with me for a lifetime and that I met playing this game. The best thing about the game itself is the people and most of them are really willing to help those who are starting or wanting to know the game", she concludes.
