Edie uncut: I try to be liked
The young Frenchman about his age, standing inside the community, love for monks and the upcoming Masters of Arena tournament.
Hey Edie, how are you doing?
Hi swissboyy, I'm doing good and you?
There aren't many people in the community that never heard your name, people seem to either like or dislike you. Do you see yourself as a controversial character? Is it important to you what people think about you?
It's not an easy task being a good Arena player and being taken seriously by the community. Since I don't take things too seriously, I kid a lot and sometimes people aren't able to see the difference between my two "characters" (me playing for fun and me being a more or less good Arena player).
In the beginning I used to take everything that was said about me personal. I still, even now, have some trouble to not care about what people say and think about me, because I try to be liked by people.
The Age Series is around the same time as you. How do you feel about being one of the youngest guys in the whole community? How do people react when they find out about your age? Do you feel people respect you less when they know that you are very young?
I think its cool, that means I have more time to play AoC than most players. I'm still young, so it doesn't really affect anything. I can play without compromising my future. Since more and more people know about my age, I feel they take me less seriously. I feel they respect me less because of my age. Many times, when there's a problem, people say it's because of my age. Sometimes they even insult me because of that.
I think it's fair to label Arena as your map, seeing you play it is the norm. Why do you like it so much? Do you see yourself playing mostly Arena as long as you play Age of Empires?
Yeah, I like Arena a lot, because before I began playing on Voobly, I was playing on GR with friends, and we played Arena most of the time. I loved the strategy aspect, the micro/macro balance of the map. I find playing the same civs and maps (Ara/Huns) really boring. Since Arena is any map/civ, I play it mostly.
Also, many Arena players have a very specific style. You especially like to push on the back of just one TC, use monks a lot. Do you think it's unfair when people draw conclusions on the back of that and label you as someone that can't manage an economy, can't boom, can't play without walls, ...?
I REALLY like monks. Sometimes, on purpose, I do 0 economy (= 0 farms) so I can micro my monks 100%. Even if I lose the game, I have a lot of fun doing that. Some may remember my game vs TheViper where I was doing a full monk rush without farms. People seeing my eco are saying/thinking that I am a noob because of that kind of play. They say I can't do anything else. I find it sad, because I have proven many times that I am able to play different kind of games. I know how to play eco games as well, I just find it less amusing. I might surprise some by saying that, but I also know how to flush, grush, drush and boom (although maybe not on the same level as top players). I smurf a lot and I'm training other maps (Arabia/Full Random/Nomad) and I'm happy with my handling of those maps.
Let's talk about the upcoming tournament, I know that you are very excited about the prospect of playing competitive on "your" map. How do you see your chances realistically? Do you think you have a chance of winning?
Indeed, I was waiting for that tourney for soo long... But I feel I have next to no chance to win this tourney. There are way too many good players involved in this tournament.
Do you think your age will be a disadvantage? Do you think experience is one of the things you lack the most right now? In which area do you think you can improve the most?
No, I don't think my age will be a disadvantage. Yeah, experience is one of the things i lack the most, I think. But I also must improve my macro and skill in imperial wars (maybe I will play DM soon ).
Who will win the Masters of Arena Tournament 2013?
I dont know... :? Riut? Lojza? TheMax?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and good luck in the tournament!
No problem. It was a pleasure, thanks to you!
