doesn't seem like a bad strategy at all tbh.
1. cheaper Advancing resources needed.
2. cheaper gunpowder units, along with genoese crossbowman is pretty sick.
It still takes time to research chemistry, and forget about a fast imperial with a castle. Castle drop or fast imperial. Choose one, or the attack won't be as effective.
Turks, with free chemistry, will probably still be better.

celts - stronghold while imp up
teutons - ironclad while upping , which gives armor for treb
japs - yasama while upping
btw italians are damn good in fi, just near to turks
i checked some build order for 19 min fi & chemistry complete around 20:50
still i feel turk straight 21 min fi is better :D
Italians Genuese GB is a very good Unit, strong against Knights, Camels, Infantry and Cavalry Archers!!
They are not OP, but this is a hard thing to Fight against them
Siege Onagers are very Expansive and avaible in Late Imp. Skirmishers are the right Unit but Italians get Condottiero, moderate Husar, good Monks and cheaper Gunpowder Units
I still think Turks have THE best fast imperial in the game. And now their FI may be even scarier, with the BBT tech costing 200 less wood, janissaries produced out of castles faster, and most importantly, the option to surprise the opponent with 90 HP cavalry archers in castle age in case they decide to mass monks or archers to counter your FI attempt.
