Why, sometimes, when you select a group of archers and click to move them to one side, they walk in the opposite direction before going to where you clicked?
The most common mistake I see people making (that causes this behaviour) is selecting units that are not close together and then trying to move them somewhere. What will happen is this: The units will move to get into formation, and those movements can be very tricky to predict sometimes (depending on distance between units). So they might appear to move in the opposite direction, but they're just trying to get into formation.
The solution is easy: Only select units that are in formation already, and micro spread out groups individually. This is important in crucial situations such as when you're close to an enemy army.
Recall the common situation on water: If you send your galleys far away they will move in a different formation compared to when you send them a short distance, so when escaping with galleys you have to make many small movements in some cases, instead of one big movement. The same principle applies on land: You always have to think about what effect your movements will have on the formation of the units.
