Edit: Mainly talking about 1v1 matchups. Drush OR Flush, whatever most of the times Xbows rule the Castle Age battlefield.
(Replace Xbows/Arbs by Cav Archers/Plumed Archers for Huns/Mayans and Light Cav by Elite Eagles for Mesos) = pretty much the only way people play AoC today, except if you're Franks/Teuts/Persians/Spanish/Goth but whatever, Huns and Mesos are vastly dominant on 1v1 Arabia.
Isn't it make the game boring to watch and kill the unit variety? I mean, who knows today that a FU Japanese Halberdier kill a FU Paladin in 1v1, a 2HS/Champ got a huge 6 bonus damage against Eagles or a Mameluke is exactly as fast as a Hun Cavalry Archer?
Not many, because if you're Jap, you don't care about these fantastic Halbs, just watch the recorded games, it's 80% Crossbow to Arbs + Capped Rams/Trebs + Onagers
If you're Viking, great infantry civ? Nope, Xbows to Arbs + Siege Rams + Onagers if you're lucky, even finishing off a game with LIGHT CAVALRY. seriously Viking Cavalry, lacking Bloodlines, Husbandry, Plate Barding Armor, even their infantry got better Pierce Armor and HP than their light cav
If you're Sara? Same who the **** need Camels and Mamelukes, Crossbow to Arbs + Bombard Cannons/Siege Onnies
As much as it improves good players macro/micro skills, this everlasting build ruins variety imo.
Either AoC balance is clearly inadequate for higher levels, players just don't ever want to try an other playstyle, or Arabia "hilly" nature. Who as ever see a Mayan War without a Plumed Archer for example? Or a Long Swordsman in Castle Age? (man these suck big time that even Goths don't make them in Castle most of the times 11)
I'm not angry or what, just noting it, seems that today these kinds of unrisky builds involving ranged units are Kings on AoC and won't find an efficient counter build in higher levels till probably never. Will it remain Age of Crossbows?
P.S: Don't make me talk about Water Maps, Galleys/War Galleys all day long till someone loses the water and get landed with the same Archers/Siege combo, Light Cav raid if you're fortunate enough
