I have read every post relating to the FFA game that was played yesterday and have thought long and hard about what has happened, I would hopefully like to clear some things up and as the person in charge of organising this event feel that it is my responsibility to do so.
Well, the idea seemed to kick up a storm of excitement and enthusiasm with you guys (see initial post here) the concept was well received and when some donations came in I knew that this event had the potential to be EPIC. SO where did it go wrong?
As the organiser I would firstly like to take some of the blame for what has happened, it was not in my foresight that things would turn out the way that they did. Of course I knew it was 4 RVK and 4 TyRanT and that teams were likely to be formed based on clans but what I did not foresee was the extent of teaming and the use of Skype. You guys have to understand that this was a FFA and in a FFA you have to make and break alliances if you want to win (that's just common sense) and what TyRanT did was totally within the rules. I just wish that they would have had more common sense than they did and decide not to use Skype.
I created a post dedicated to the settings of the game and another outlining the rules here and here, not once in these posts were any concerns voiced about the rules or the game settings so I would like to point out that as a community this was not foreseen by any of us and therefore very little could be done about it.
When it was bought to our attention that it was in fact 4 RVK and 4 TyRanT I made another post here that proposed a 4v4 showmatch instead. This was completely rejected and it was settled that the community wanted a FFA, and that is exactly what they got. Unfortunately it didn't go the way that any of us were expecting and I understand that a lot of you (including myself) are extremely disappointed about that. The situation has not been made better by the fact that DreaIVIS was the only player to stream and until only after the game (when most of the flaming and opinions had already been formed) we could see the recording. As for the issue with the sound, I am willing to give DreaIVIS the benefit of the doubt that he didn't realise it was off.
Understandably TyRanT played to win, however I believe the use of Skype was a step too far. The problem is, where was the rule to say that no Skype is allowed? How do you enforce such a rule and ensure that Skype isn't being used? I am deeply sorry that I didn't add this rule to the list of rules as I did not foresee what would happen, just like nobody else did in any of the comments to the previous linked posts. Yes, what TyRanT did was unethical but it was also within the rules... so how do you deal with a situation like that? I propose (if all the players are willing) that we have a rematch without the use of Skype and with a few tweaked rules. This will be the opportunity to 1. Redeem ourselves for our mistakes and 2. Prove to the community that we can learn form our mistakes and improve for next time.
I understand that a lot of you are angry at what has happened, but I would like to urge you to not argue amongst yourselves. Take a step back and imagine you are someone from the outside viewing the community right now, would you want to be part of that community? I don't think so. It is a sad loss that Fallingstar and Bublifuk have already chosen to leave, I do hope that they reconsider their decisions as they are extremely important and respected people within this community, don't you guys go turning anyone else away too. Remember, AoC is an old game and many of us are doing whatever we can to keep the game alive and thriving, whatever event we plan or whatever action the majority of us take should be to strengthen the community and spark more interest in the game. Going around flaming each other and leaving non-constructive criticism really isn't helping the situation, if you want to see AoC stay alive then you'll need to leave your 14 year-old selves behind and get some maturity so that we can learn from our experiences instead of running them into the ground.
I would like to thank all of the players who took part and the community for showing a lot of great support to this event, hopefully we can see this issue resolved.
Thank you for reading, I know this has been a long post. Hopefully we can put the behind us and move on to bigger and better things.
