Kw1k000000 do you just wake up and think, you know what? today I think I will try and argue an obviously incorrect point of view. Then later on in the day you think, I am just going to ignore the points people are making and continue as if they haven’t said anything.
Point 1: Doubt they will play it competitively
Isn’t their friendship built on competitiveness originally? Viper chasing DauT when he made a lobby to try and get better at the game. Can only imagine friendship came from that and TyranT, however who am I to say.
When the top two players in any sport clash in a competitive nature, with money on the line, don’t you think it will be competitive?
Just looking at the hall of fame on Escapes website Viper has made $3,400, DauT £3,250, Nicov $2,700 and in 4th Tatoh on $950. You can see that Viper and DauT are a fair bit ahead of 3rd place and way ahead of Tatoh in 4th. I think they both can quite easily have something to prove here. Viper also won the MoA 2v2. There has not been a RM tournament this year that Viper or DauT wasn’t in the final and only the single tournament that one of them hasn’t won (Nicov took it in this case).
IMO the friendship there will only make things more competitive. They aren’t going to be on team speak chatting like they have been a few past streams, that is for fun, this is to be competitive and put on a show.
Point 2: $2k isn't a lot
We don’t know what Viper earns and quite frankly I don’t want to know that isn’t the sort of thing you discuss with people or ask about on a forum like this. I am sure there are plenty of small revenue streams such as YouTube (which just got slashed) and twitch ads/ looties when they were there all adding small amounts to the pot but donations and subs will be the main chunk of earnings. If I had to guess I would say $12k from donations so far this year and $7.5k from subs, although this is a heavy guess and could be based on figures that include donations from last year etc so like I said, complete guess. I will round up to $20k because of the other income streams and literally having no idea at all what they bring in. Four months work for $20k (Will ignore taxes as I assume this will be treated as taxable too, so in reality makes no difference) or one/two days work for $2k. Worth nothing it is actually +£1k if you win and -£1k if you lose, but same thing really. Literally now at this point just remembered tournament winnings even though I talked about them above lol, but the point still remains. Money is all relative to what you make but the time commitment involved really does make this worth the money.
Point 3: Viper has 750 subs so makes over $2k a month anyway + Donations
Same as above really, so what? The $2k in prize money is the biggest a single person in anywhere but China has been able to win for quite some time I believe?
Point 4: No one has anything to prove
I am not sure how this could be more wrong really. A substantial amount of money on the line, the theoretical crown of #1 at AoC currently and then also add in the competitive friendship element. DauT is such a troller, if I was Viper and knew I was going to see him in Germany in August, imagine the trolling if he beats you. It leads to quite a lot on the line here.
Point 5: 8 hours a day, 5 days a week - Not the same for streaming
5 Streams this week, one stream for every working day. I would say the average stream length is about 5 hours, but that is a bit of an estimation as I am too lazy to go back the past few weeks and see when the streams started and when they finished, by all means go and look if you want. What I can do however is tell you there are more than 5 x 3, so 15 hours a week worth of content creation, discussions with people to improve the stream, social media, adding the person touch with fans on discord and the likes and then the biggest time sink which wouldn’t surprise me if it was more than 15 hours a week on its own which is YouTube. Creating more content to put up on YouTube, transferring original content onto YT etc.
Working for yourself is much harder than your average 9 to 5 job and it is pretty annoying when people assume you have it cushty, there are things that you just don’t understand until you give it a go. My life was much easier when I would wake up, go to work, come home from work and then live my life. I don’t know how it is for streamers, but I am almost always working and never working at the same time. I am always networking trying to find new ways to exploit the bookies while at the same time struggling to make myself work because of Twitch and AoE.
If $2k isn’t much to Viper, you work out what 1/Xth (lets say 1/30th) of your yearly salary is pre tax, and we can do a BO21 in a few months, if you have seen me play, surely you are guaranteed to win it, giving you free money. Then you can tell me if you wanted to win or if the money didn’t motivate you at all.
