What's your capability on the game?
It's an interesting topic I'd like to discuss with other players. Some people focus on defence, others on offence, some adopt a hybrid approach dependent on the situation. But what are your core strengths and how do you bring it them to AoC?
I am an all out player, and the tactics I use reflect this. I favour Huns War because it suits me best; it fits my core strengths, which have been developed by using this civilization for a long time. I am by no means an economy king. To be an economy king and an all out offensive player would have trade-offs, so I like to try and conquer my opponents quickly. I am not one for mind games or clever tricks, I use all out force in an attempt to overpower my opponents.
For the most part, this style/approach/strategy, is very successful. I have the most easily accessible hotkeys prioritised toward navigating between military structures (castles, stables, barracks etc) and I utilise my force in its entirety by numbering them in medium to large groups and quite literally moving them together as one via the quick use of patrol, directing them to an area behind the enemy's army/structures. This said, I do not allow my forces to be without control. I am constantly exercising my fingers across each groups' assigned number key, moving them back and forth, trying to gather momentum in a 'snowball' effect attack.
To help me achieve this, I employ the use of Market as it gives me a gold advantage over my opponent. As my strategy lies in removing my opponent's force from the game and dismantling any attempts of a comeback, it is important that I utilise the advantage before my opponent. Where gaining Market fails, the strategy will remain, but an initial but small defensive game will be played, where direct engagement is avoided at all costs unless the opponent has a poor start and a strong offensive attack can be profitable. The primary objective is to gain as much gold as possible before I commit to a main attack. This evens the playing field and my core strengths in offensive engagement can begin.
Reading this far, it may seem as if I am underpinning those strengths which my opponents can act upon. However, most players know my style through and through, and certain play styles counter my offensive capabilities relatively well. Other than the control and hotkeys dedicated to prioritising navigation around structures and numbered units, there is not much in the way of clever tactical gaming offer by me.
Although I am aware of this, and it is an area I have considered improving, I can get by with watching battles develop, positioning units out of harms way (or in harms way in the case of the battering ram absorbing archer fire) to gain an edge. But the most important capability I have to offer is in how quickly I can amass a second force. It can single handily allow me to win games as I am able to out produce my opponent whilst he spends his resources on economy and sets in for a longer game; a longer game that quite often never materialises.
However, Jidba has exposed my strengths on many occasions, and will rarely resign in the face of defeat (as shown in the recent game with over 103 downloads) due to the fact that, as my capabilities fit so narrowly within the confines of my offensive strategy, I am inflexible in being able to repel a drawn out game where a well evaded base/economy/military can have a second wind over my forces and turn the tables.
This kind of game analyse interests me a great deal and I have offered the time to dissect a portion of my own capability in return for those reading this (with an advanced knowledge of the game or not) to share their own strengths and offer some insight into how they bring these to AoC.
I guess you could say the real question is, how does your capability allow you achieve the results you desire on the battlefield?
Other comments, no matter your skill level, are of course welcome.
Thanks,
ImperiuM
