As an example, actually quite a personal one, I've first encountered Scoobie on the ladder a little more than 2 months ago. At first I got concerned about how close he wanted to be. He even proposed that he would visit me at home. Since there's a pandemic going on I kindly declined. It was still a nice thought. I'd love to have an irl friend from aoe pepeHappy
Anyway, since then we haven't met each other on the ladder for quite a while. A month had passed and then I had a pleasure to meet my friend Scoob again. He immediately noticed that my gameplay was lacking. Seeing that, he tried to emphatically highlight my mistakes and motivate me:

To a person who doesn't know Scoobie it could sound rude but I knew he means well and he wants the best for me.
And... That worked! He motivated me so much I exceeded everyone's expectations even his!

Later on we met each other on the ladder again, games were quick and I feel like Scoobie has finally acknowledged me as his friend.

I am always surprised. Because I though of Age of Empires II as a highly specialized game, but Big_Scoob still makes relatively big mistakes. Of course, he fails on a much higher level than most, but that he still is able to get 2k. Wow BTW. Why is game speed 1.7?

What voobly era are you talking about? On voobly before WK it was always 1v1 huns, and plenty of players were walling (even stonewalling), hell on voobly I would full wall fc every game on arabia, and definitely had no shortage of games 11

EDIT: Remember TheViper's Random account, where he only played random civs? He did it purely because nobody would ever play random 11

I've played on Voobly since roughly 2012 and I never did I see pick civ was tolerated. First couple of years it was all Huns. Then the meta shifted to all mirror. I guess people got bored with huns only and wanted to play other civs as well. My guess is that this had something to do with the introduction of the new WK civs. People wanted to try out these new civs obviously. However, people still wanted to avoid unfair matchups, so 'mirror' was basically the only setting that was played. Then the meta changed to random civ. I think it has to do with the fact that 'drafting civs' was introduced in tournaments, and people realized that playing random civs could actually be fun and result in fair matchups. Shortly after, 'mirror' was considered boring and wasn't really played. However, during all this time, in my experience, picking civ was never tolerated.

It's also because of what @Rustyiesty is saying: When he starts losing he just immediately resigns all his games so he drops to 1600 and can beat everyone up again
