Australia Gap Year

Hello friends. I'm going to Australia in a month to do the whole working/holiday visa year. Just looking for any tips/advice from anyone who has done this before, or any native Aussies who can give any advice. I have a rough plan just now: I'm going to be spending my time on the east coast, I plan on doing some farming work for the first months in case I decide to stay for the second year visa, then I will spend some time in a city before travelling around for the last month or two. My main concern is of course finding a job. Any advice/tips/stories/experiences are appreciated.

watch out for the dingoes, killer kangaroos, drop bears, 30 meter great white sharks, 1263 different varieties of venomous snek, ned kelly roaming through the bush, spiders (all of them even if they are not venomous, where there is one there is many more), scorpions especially them small ones, the crocodiles mainly found in rivers, blue ringed octopus and a few deadly jellyfish, them bin chickens they are a disaster for aussies, birds stealing food straight out of hands, wedge tailed eagles circling overhead and last but not least guaranteed lag on online games when using servers in other countries or connecting peer to peer.

i was totally fine until you mentioned the lag. now reconsidering my decision.

Wear caps with tails and sunglasses, or a full helmet, magpies are actual savage beasts !

Be prepared to get exploited when u do farm work,unless you hit the jackpot,you ll be slaving your guts out for very little reward. Unfortunately aussie farmers do not care about your bank balance,they care about squeezing as much work out of you in return for giving you as little as possible.

My advice would to bring as much cash as possible and forget the backpacker bullshet. Get a job in the city, youll enjoy Australia a lot more.

i took 40k the first time i went to Aussie and lived in a town where their was good paying work,really enjoyed it.2nd time i went with much less money and was forced to do menial shite to get by,i was driving 120kms 1 way as there can be vast distances inbetween towns and hated it. However generally the people are cool which makes up for it a bit.

Also its extremely hot there man,if you are coming from the northern hemisphere,be ready for the heat extremes especially in summer. It literally did not rain at all where i stayed in the winter and was 25-27 c That gets above 40c in summer but conversely the rain absolutely belts down when it does rain.

Australians are generally alright tho,if you come prepared youll have a good time. If you come with little cash reserves and expect to make a killing picking tomatoes or bananas or mangoes forget it. I made good money picking pears the first time i went to northern victoria but i was a beast back then and completely dominated teams of pickers by myself. Asians dominate farmwork now,its not worth your effort,you ll get swarmed and underpaid. If you are a hard carnt who can handle yourself,disregard what ive said as you might get lucky and dominate,i just dont back your chances in todays environment.Good luck.

yes men i had major fun on that farm dominating the french and english backpackers who had never picked before.I showed up at the start by myself and the greek grower told me he only employed teams but i told him im a 1 man army and he laughed and looked after me. I would get my tractor and block people or slow them down,hide their bins,pick their rows where the good fruit was and was generally an ass,it was good money and was like shooting fish in a barrel. The french sent their biggest guy down to confront me after i blocked them with my tractor and machine gunned their line,but i just loled.

ive worked with many different nationalities on orchards,farms and abbatoirs around Australia and NZ and to me the hardest were the Chinese.Very disciplined people.Strong too.It seems that they are not fazed by tough working conditions.

i would pick flat out during the day starting as soon as i could see outline of fruit,would only stop to drink water. I would also go to the gym after work,man i was super fit and motivated back then.However my gym strength took a nosedive of course. The temperature would get to 40c and above which i combatted by going and having a cold shower at lunchtime seeing as i only lived 5 min drive away from the farm.I also took 12 litres of water which i drank all of it.

Work in the cities. Minimum wage is really high here. Picking fruits you'll def get ****ed over.
