AOE-II DE Are Monks Healing Knights equivalent to 20 Villagers? Maths Post

Hera mentioned he heard monks healing knights is equivalent to 20 villagers food-gold. Not to add to any drama, but I really wanted to check this maths for myself. So here's my first attempt;


Monk heals one unit at 150 hp/min

Knight has 120 HP. Would take 45 seconds for monk to heal 1HP knight

So 45 Seconds approx. to regen the value of 60 Food and 75 Gold

Monks healing Knights generate around 160 total res value a minute

Vills collect about 20 res a minute on food and gold early game (Spirit of the Law)

Monks healing Knights generates resource value per minute similar to 8 villagers working on Gold and Food, 160 res value a minute


These are my mental estimations, using exact calculations would give a more accurate answer. Let me know if I'm wrong or you got a different answer!

The whole one monk healing is 20 vils stems from byzantine monks, which heal twice as fast. So it comes pretty close to that. Also I think the most efficient unit to heal are crossbows if I remember correctly. Honestly healing crossbows, especially after a mango shot feels even more satisfying as with knights.

I think its bzy monks healing byz knights/cata which have less HP. so twice as fast for higher value.


Recent hoang games are won because he has monks to convert and heal his units. The small fragile eco he has is focused on making new units, while old ones dont die.

That means that monk is by far the most valuable unit in the game. Not because it heals other units, but because healing monk gives you far more value than anything else. Using that logic, monk without sanctity is fully healed in 12 seconds = 500 res/minute. Which is roughly equal to 25 villagers working on gold.
So to simplify things - Hera's wrong about healing kts, the unit worth healing is a monk. And therefore, monk has higher value than a knight. And therefore it's always better to make a monk than a knight, it's cheaper and has so much more value.
Also 1 monk = 25 villagers on gold. That's why it isn't worth to add any eco while going monks, because there are better ways to spend your resources than those boring farms and vills.
And lastly, doing sanctity is arguably bad thing, becuase if you make, your army of 20 monks which has value of 500 vills turns into roughly value of 333 vills.

I completely understand what you mean, however your way of putting it is bit strange. Not 20 monks has value of 500 vills, but healing 20 monks can be calculated to that extend, not like realistically you can get 20 monks to 1hp and so on, but yes. Even if I know is just a mathematical "game/point of view" is still strange as calculating value of sancity only makes sense in a way that instead of having 600 hp of monks for 2k gold, getting 810 hp of monks for 1950 gold. And in practical experience you lose way less monks, so value is way bigger than you can calculate with such simple math.

Btw don't misunderstand me, I like such point of views, also Survavlist was talking many times about how cost effective is to have monks especially with catapharcs etc. And I do think pretty much everyone underuse monks as for healing purpose.

Btw 2, off topic, but as you play arena a lot, how bengalis do in arena with that +3/+3?

Edit. Thought it costs 150 gold, apparantly only 120. I guess here it fits, tell me you are not arena player without saying it 11

so if you trade one monk for a knight conversion, this actually is a pretty bad deal, and you should never sacrifice a monk to convert any single unit, since it basically loses you 25 vils

On a different note: Shouldn't monks be able to heal themselves? Something like Camel archers healing themselves but without requiring an upgrade.

I mean, say you're a monk. You've been meditating since a child and have attained remarkable powers. Your mystical touch can mend the wounds of soldiers. Why're you not able to do that to **** to yourself? 11

They invested self-healing perk into the ability to regenerate health of farms instead (btw Hera did that once in his Bo33 vs Vinchester, blessed farm quickly stopped burning).

As far as I know monks don't actually heal farms, they repair them. It costs ressources.

Weirdly enough a Byz ally makes Monks heal Farms faster, and a Teuton player can heal Farms from further away. But it does cost resources, Teutons even get their normal discount.

Mhh... if it weren't about the Teuton farm cost bit, I'd say they are healing but take a fee. But this truely makes it a mystery...

Yep your math is correct.

I would apply some buff to monk healing to the herbal medicine tech.
