HISTORY : Gone are the days when only original MS developers(ES) used to develop patches and supports. The last official change in aoe2 world was the introduction of v1.0c (e was fan based) and that was almost a decade ago. Since then almost all major tournaments were played in "version c". very well
PRESENT : Now we have seen a lot of long existing bugs fixed(UserPatch) and new expansion(AoFE,which includes UP) coming in last 2 years. These were made possible by aoe fans who refused to sit and wait. And April,9,2013 was historic day,we know why? AOE2:HD was introduced by Microsoft Studios. They are doing their work hard bringing patches every now and then (patch #2.6,27 Jul 2013). kudos to all.
FUTURE : The question now is with aoc+UPv1.3, AoFE, AOE2:HD on our table , what will be 'Universal' and so called 'Official' game where all tournaments will be played ? Which game will AoCZone recommend? Will an expert player who loves HD will have to play all tourneys at Voobly? How will aoc players cope with so much bifurcation ? Won't we have to install each type of games - UP/HD/AoFE so that we can play different type of players online(don't forget gameranger where people still play 1.0a) or for that matter to watch a rec game of other type in which one doesn't like to play?
OR is it just me thinking too much of future?

Good were those old days when there was just patch c and we hardly had compatibility issues.
