I'm writing this because a lot of people are asking me what's next? When is the next big tournament happening? When is BCC4 coming? When is WCL8? When is the Nations cup? A lot of you seem to think that something will just show up any second now, but it's not that easy.
Voobly tournaments are good, but they don't invite the highest level to want to be at their best or generate that "I WANT TO WIN THIS" feeling. Nor did the MOA2v2 or the GML. Why? Because of the prizes I assume.
All the last events that has been going on have been created by us playing it ourselves. The GML, the MOA2v2, this BO21, and then there's the Voobly tournaments like MORM, MOA and MOAre. All of these have been created because we've worked hard behind the scenes to make them happen, and had to ask around for donations to try and attract players. A thing missing in the AOC scene these days are those few guys with thicker wallets that are willing to donate bigger sums for larger tournaments and create amazing events like a BCC4 or a new MOH or basically whatever they would want to see once they would bring up their interest.
I think most players don't really need the money from the tournaments, but they need the prizes to know that everyone around is sharpened up and that the competition really is as high as it can be and knowing that everyone is giving it everything they've got. Those types of tournaments are what brings us new aoc heros, making everyone practice hard, making players around the 2200 level take the next few steps, forcing the best to renew themselves and perform to the max of their abilitiy, basically just generating legendary tournaments.
That's at least how I felt during the WCL7, when I started my climb. I practiced so hard when I was around the 2200-2300 level once that tournament was announced, and it was so motivating to see other teams and players feeling the same way. I'm sure new players will be created if something like it happened again.
Last events have not brought the best of the game to feel the need to practice hard though, not since the WCL7, and sadly I feel that the competetive scene of AOC is dropping heavily due to the lack of the greater events these last 8-9 months. Hopefully I'm wrong and something comes up in not too long, but I just feel that there's a big lack of competition these days, which makes it really hard to motivate oneself to try and stay on the top. But then again, AOE2HD is just released, so we can never be too sure what that could bring once it's up running well.
But to the point: for everyone asking and expecting what comes next and when; I simply can't tell you, neither can anyone else in the administration area. There is no guy in the shadow pulling the threads and throwing in the cash like there was once Tyrant was created or the Arbalet/Canary period anymore. And nothing is in the works in this very moment, no BCC4, no Pinnacle, and no Nations Cup.
