Alright, so we know the HD version is meh at best. Will it get better? nobody knows. At least the devs are keeping us updated and what not. There is a post from friday from reifm02 http://aoczone.net/viewtopic.php?f=693&t=87345 that provides some insight.
Firstly, I wanted to say please keep the "HD will alwayz suck, vooblies 4evar" stuff out of here, please.
Now, I wanted to talk about even though the HD version is meh, I still want to see the community thrive in every way possible. Since it's release, there are always 8-9 AoC streams on Twitch, as opposed to the rare 1 before HD. Right now, there is 100,811 HD accounts made. Thats quite a number as opposed to the 4,000 before HD. I know a lot a lot don't play MP, but there are quite a few that do. I know most of them are noobs, just like we were when we started playing way back when. Obviously most of the buyers were going to be new, otherwise they would have been on Voobly. So I'm kind of confused as to why some people expected every HD player to be on par with the veterans on Voobly.
Anyway, the fact of the matter is there is a huge player base on HD right now, and we aren't taking advantage of it. The best way to right now is STREAM. I know a lot of you can, and some of you do, but most don't. To get a community growing, you have to be apart of it. You don't even have to stream HD, because there isn't a HD version and regular AoC to choose from on Twitch. Just a couple days ago, some guy streamed and didn't even know farms produced food, it was his first time but he had 200 viewers.
I've started streaming a couple days ago, getting viewer games as well as laddering in, and people watched. I've also started a Steam group specifically for tournaments I will host with different rating placements (IE base 1400-1601 rating is it's separate tournament, and so on) (I also know the ratings are kind of useless but it's the fairest way I could come up with). I will be happy to cough up some Amazon gift cards for the prizes and what not (who doesn't like Amazon) Just to get a community thing going. This is the place I thought I'd announce it.
Will AoC become a one community thing (all at Voobly or all at the HD version)? Probably not. But really, it doesn't matter as long as the community is thriving. Viewers on Twitch etc etc. As a matter of fact, I think I heard Viper just got partnered on Twitch, so the viewers are there.
I really want the community to grow, and last. I hope you guys do too, and strive to become a not only bigger but better community within Voobly and Steam.
