Even though I fully support your "community feeling", BugA, you can't deny that not all people think like that. Which I think explains the whole reason why they'd rather do it by themselves. Everyone has their own goals and own personality. Maybe their goal is more to set up something of their own rather than helping out others. Even if the accomplishment in the end (an aoc community site) is the same.
I fully understand their goals if I look at myself. I could write my aoc articles and put them either here or on heavengames, where I sure would get a lot more attention than on my own little site. But I didn't chose that way and fully understand why others wouldn't do something similar.
I find it really hard to get my point across in this matter but it kinda comes down to "personal goals". Even if there is a global goal that is similar.
(That doesn't take away that I found the selling of aocgroup a dull move, but I understand why they did it to an extent)
