So yesterday a new piece of kit arrived -- the 50" Seiki SE50UY04, regarded as the first relatively affordable 4k screen with a resolution of 3840x2160. On my main work machine I have technically been using 4k since 2007 with IBM T221's, but have never installed AOC on it for obvious reasons (mainly id never get anything done!).
I'll just get straight to the point and say that AOC in 4k in my opinion will be a future game changer. Seeing everything right there in front of you without having to scroll is a completely different experience than the normal jerky back and forth between scenes. AoCZone wouldn’t let me upload images above 1200px high, so I am I am attaching a link to an imgur gallery with my island in an islands game. Essentially I had my entire island fit on the screen, and I never had to scroll anywhere (not once) in dark. All the necessary things in dark -- sheep, boars, stone, gold, wood, coast -- they all fit.
I found myself noticing things I never would have noticed before as far as the enemy goes. If you think about it, if you are macroing at your tc for a few seconds and the enemy comes into and out of the fog of a distant house during that time, you'd never see it. But having everything there in front of you I would pick up things in my peripheral vision that normally wouldn’t be detected.
Since the screen is 50", really things are the size they would be on a normal computer screen. When you look at the imgur previews there is the illusion that things must be tiny, but really they aren't. For example the physical size of a vill appears to be exactly the same size on the Seiki as a normal 1080p dell monitor. It's just that the canvas is expanded four times the size.
Now for the reason 4k is NOT yet ready for prime time, and why I will likely not use it much for AOC. The Seiki and all the other current 4k screens out there only support 4k resolution at 30hz (HDMI 1.4 only supports that much bandwidth, and it doesn’t have displayport). And it really sucks. Most apparent is the jerkiness of the mouse cursor -- it is just awful. The game itself looks great though, battles and such all are smooth, and scrolling the screen is smooth. But the mouse cursor at 30hz most would find unplayable, even though i am driving it with a GTX Titan. I don’t think 4k will be a valid option until they start making them in 60hz, maybe in the next year or two.
Here is the imgur gallery. When you hover over an image an icon will appear in the upper-right to allow you to view them at full resolution.
