I always thought the default hotkeys were horrible and still played them for 10+ years just out of laziness and inertia against changing them. But eventually took some time and frustration of around 50 games to completely re haul my hotkeys. At first, it might even look tedious but approach is simple.
1) I do not want to move my left wrist on keyboard or have minimum amount of movement.
2) I want minimum number of keys and combination of keys to encompass complete hotkey set
3) Most simple keys to reach should have most important. task e.g Making farms, panic palisade.wall, panic w-gate/s-gate, gate rotation (hence keys like Q-Q, B-B etc)
4) Getting max use out of these easily reachable keys
5) Complimentary keys. e.g Build Market (Dwn scroll) Build smith (Up Scroll), Split formation (Scr dwn), Tight (Scr up)
6) No key conflicts/overlaps.
7) A set that can be learned in steps. I used hotkey generator for this and templates lets you keep track of it. Make a temporary hk file and keep appending it with new keys after every few games.
Having gone through a really tormenting process of switching set of hotkeys, I feel that one should not do a full switch unless you are someone like Dalai Lama and still probably bad idea to keep track of all. Do it in steps. Pick a group (Eco buildings, military buildings, Unit production).
Anyway, not claiming that these are the best.. these feels like best to me and I find these far more logical and actually simple than almost all youtube guides I saw before starting on these. You can pick up the template and customize your own as well. (Also even though I have used keys for upgrades, that is something I find unnecessary to have keys for but its there if I ever get used to that. )
