About a month ago I was playing a game in the Community Patch using the handicap mode and loosing badly. Not because the level was too different. The problem I identified was that my opponent, who was playing with some handicap, knew very well how to do a feudal rush build order. Therefore he had reached the second age with good ammount of resources, good distribution of villagers and was already researching Castle age while I was struggling to keep up with military numbers.
After the game I thought that what my opponent needed was not a boost in Dark Age, he knew very well what to do then. He needed the handicap's help later in the game, when you have to balance military, economy and it's easier to leave buildings idle or make mistakes.
So I decided to implement a feature in Voobly's handicap mode to control when the player gets the handicap boost. This new feature allows to set the handicap mode in Dark, Feudal or Castle age, to better adapt players and map styles.
This new feature of the handicap mode is unique to Voobly's Community Patch. If Definitive Edition ever implements something like this, remember that you saw it here first.
