Since I play this game only for a year, in the last time I started to try to think more and understand for myself why experts do things they do, and not only copy what they're doing withtout having a clue of whats going on. So I started doing some calculus myself with resources gathering time and military units production costs. So now I know things like you need 4 gold miners, and about 3 lumberjacks/1 archery range to sustain continous production of archers/CAs(53 gold for huns), that 1 fully feudal upgraded lumberjack (wheelsbarrow and double bit axe) can support 5 farms (with horse coallar) etc.
Lately I've been thinking of how would a CA + Monks strategy work in hun wars... The only problem would be that monks are really really slow, but, i think that they can be usefull if you put a lot of pressure upon your enemy, or if you are under the same pressure. Though I think they're not so effective if the war is actually only raiding, hit and run with CAs.
But here is what I have, according to my calculus:
I'm not on PC now, and i forgot to check the costs of a monastery, but I think it's similar with a range = 175 woood.
To sustain a continuous monks production from 1 monastry, u need 100 gold (monk production cost) at every 50 seconds (monk production time). That means that u will need 5 vills working on gold (considering wheelsbarrow and first gold mining upgrade - we're already in Castle Age)
As i said before, for a range, you need 3 ljacks and 4 gold miners (actually, I think you can sustain 4 ranges CAs production with 10-11 lumberjacks and 13-14 gold miners, when they're fully feual upgraded..) That's a total of 28 vills for 4 ranges (12 wood, 16 gold).
If we go for 3 ranges (9w + 12g vills) + 1 monastry (5g), we will need a total of 26 vills (9 wood, 17 gold) to sustain their continuous production. So we have 2 vills that we can use for different purposes.
My calculus have been made only on paper, but not tested yet in game, but I think I am right...
It now remains to see if monks are really effective, and if they are, than when would be good to use them. I think that when the opponent goes for knights, it could really be an optional strat
I'm looking forward to see your ideas, and please don't hesitate to correct me if you think my calculus is wrong.
