2v2 World Cup 2020 Announcement

NachoAoE and T90Official are very excited to announce the 2v2 World Cup is returning to Age of Empires II. Since the first 2v2 World Cup in late 2018 the community has skyrocketed and it's time to see what countries can bring to the table in a new time for AoE2! Countries will be competing for a starting prizepool of $30,000 sponsored by Microsoft & T90Official.


The top 32 teams will be placed into 8 groups of 4 teams each. Teams will compete in GSL format to determine the Top 2 teams in each group. The top 16 teams then play in the main bracket for a chance for the title.

But don't worry, those who don't make the main event will have the opportunity to play in the Silver League!


Total Prizepool = $30,000

Main Event = $27,500

1st = $7,200
2nd = $5,100
3rd/4th = $2,600
5-8th = $1,100
9th-16th = $700

Silver League = $2,500

1st = $1,000
2nd = $700
3rd/4th = $400

• Microsoft - $25,000
• T90Official - $5,000

Spoiler: Funding

All of Microsoft's contribution $25,000 will be used towards the prizepool. T90Official will contribute $1 per Twitch Subscriber at conclusion of 2v2 World Cup (minimum of $5,000), split evenly between the Main event & the Silver League. Meaning current and future supporters of the channel contribute towards the event as well as himself.

Quarterfinals: 12th - 13th December
Semifinals: 19th December

To give players from countries with nobody else in the top 500 or something a chance, I would like one qualification bracket (of 4 or 2 teams) with wildcards combinations. Think it's very difficult to balance those teams (liereyy+DauT clearly very OP), so maybe the actual team combinations could be a lucky dip or something of 4/8 players interested to give top wildcard with the lowest

I love this concept, gives people to root for their country.

I agree that it should be more about the pride of representing one's country than to win though.

I know how it feels if a small country without 2 top 500 players has to face Brazil in the first round, so it would be more exciting for them if you could set up some seeds for the strong teams, and only let weaker teams or smaller countries fight against each other in the first few rounds.

For example, countries with less than 10million people will start from the first round, and countries with less than 100million people will start from the 2nd round, etc.

Ya how dare Nacho run a 2nd iteration of a tournament from 2018 with the same rules, and get 30k prize money for it. The pure cheek of daring to potentially leave some top players without a 2k2+ partner.

You are free not to watch it. There's no need to come in and **** over something Nacho and T90 have worked hard to organise.

This would free up DauT, Liereyy, Hearttt, Belgium and probably a few others, while still emphasizing the national aspect of the competition.

Allowing people from obviously different countries to team will already destroy the identity of the tournament as a "world cup." Why shouldn't I be able to destroy it further? I dont care what the ****in leaderboard says, your proposed rating limit is senseless and never going to be implemented anyways LUL

I don't get the slippery slope arguments that yugoslavia is "clearly" the same as the Holy Roman Empire and the Incan Empire of hundreds of years ago. I mean you're obviously being sarcastic or just obtuse but why? Seems reasonable to say that if a player has dual citizenship or was born in the same country as another player they can be on the same team for a world cup. Is it possible to leave it at that?

Pretty simple rule. No I wouldn't consider Austria and Germany the same country lol but yugoslavia and yugoslavia sure are

I'm not quite sure what this argument is about any more. My point was simply that "world cup" can mean a variety of things, and that perhaps we could strike a compromise to allow all the best players to compete and have a shot (which as a spectator I want to see, and which, given how lucrative this tournament is, would be fairest to the players).

I personally hate the idea that teams have to be based on nationality and I don't see how it's better or more competitive than an open 2v2, but if that's to be the theme of the tournament then so be it. My original post was offering a way to keep that basic theme but make the tournament more open and competitive, that's all.

I know DE has killed 4v4s, but I thought 4v4s based on language could be like a mix of clan 4v4s and national teams.

You could have Germanic, Spanish, Slavic and Scandinavian teams to battle the already established veteran Chinese, Viet, Suomi and Portuguese. 26 of the 27 2k3+ players plus 6 below 2k3.

I would also love to watch a 4v4 showmatch of full Tempo/AM vs GL+Yo, i.e. the top 8 players in an equal 4v4

Tournament is gonna be fun, for sure. But as other mentioned I am not a big fan of the nations idea behind it. AOE does very well without nations, and if i rember right the mods at some streams during the aoelmpics had to do overtime to filter comments of that 0,1 % that wanted to make a nationlaist comment.
Probably still gonna watch it, because it is gonna be great nevertheless.

I am still curious though how the admins are going to decied, when it comes to proof of Nationality. From other sports (volleyball) i know that it is not that easy. With a younger player, who came to our club 2 years ago as a refugee there was a lot of paper work, when he wanted to play for germanys under 21 Team. The association had to held a public ethic committee where the matter was discussed. We actually had to bring a lawyer. We had to send a authenticated copy of his passport to the headquarter. And they had to give us a statement on their Privacy policy. Well since the id card from Afghanistan looks cheaper then the scorecard of my bakery, they had to have specialist on that matter... in the end he got the german citizenship faster than the approval of the association.
But I assume that they will get help from microsofts legal department.

I'd just like to point out top players who don't have a good partner to play at a high level most likely will have opportunities to play show matches, small 1v1 tournaments or just use the time to improve their YouTube channel, earn money by giving classes or whatever, maybe decrease the time spent playing for a month or two. No one is going to have to quit AoE scene just because they can't get a top team in 2v2 World Cup.
