I will discuss with you here what make Byzantines imbalanced and why it is hard to deal with them.
I think all of you know that Byzantines have a very high winrates in the high ELOs and you will mostly see them in top 5 in the ladder at the high ELO and always being picked/banned every tournament. .
Byzatnines have free town watch and free town patrol so what does this mean? This mean in early feudal/castle it is really hard to hit them with a surprise attack or sneaky plan here and their which makes them have a safe eco and also give them the time to make a response which will make their game smoother but this is just one thing so let's move on to the stronger points that they also have.
The cheap counters make them also very hard to play against, whatever you make they can just spam a huge army even in early feudal and will make your game harder. They will always have bigger army than you with their cheap dirt counters and you will also need to go with same units but you will pay A LOT MORE. This will make your game harder and your eco weaker but they will be ok since their units are cheap dirt. This is just the beginning.
Having cheap counters means they can switch so easily between units which not an easy thing to do at all for a normal civ. It will cost you a lot to keep switching in contrary the cheap dirt Byzantines. This bonus have a very huge effect until post imperial since their counter units cheaper all the way.
Let's move to the othet point which is the cheap dirt imperial age upgrade for them. While you are struggling against this dumb civ in feudal and castle age and when you think you could have some rest or do some damage then KABOOOOOM they are in imp!
Cheap imp is really tough and huge bonus to play against. In Arena they can kill you so fast and in Arabia they have a very huge power spike with this cheap imp which will let you really struggle a lot to deal with and in most cases you will die if you don't have a very strong civ with strong eco in all the stages.
Byzantines also have insane heal bonus, their monks with 100% heal more speed are just dumb. Putting 2 monks behind your army while fighting another one will really make a huge difference since they heal units so fast. Also their buildings and castles just don't die and have too much hp and they also have a very good tech tree.
What to do?
IMO Byzantines should get 2 nerfs in the next patches:
* Their counter units bonus discount needs a nerf. IMO it should be 15% instead of 25%.
* Their imperial age discount also needs a nerf. It should be 20% instead of 33%
