Naval combat is boring and many players don't understand how to use water for map control. Then why is Arabia considered "standard"?
Well first off, thats the standard of human beings, or most of the creatures on planet earth, but not the standard of all the organisms. Second of all, its basically a born "feature" instead of a choice / preference. Also there are probably scientific / logical reasons why most of the earrth creatures share this "standard" feature.why is 2 eyes 1 nose 1 mouth 2 ears considered "standard"?
There are still other open land maps tho, with or without the "standard" starting resources.Naval combat is boring and many players don't understand how to use water for map control.
^Someone who clearly never spent an hour doing galley/longboat microNaval combat is boring
Almost all the original ES maps use this distribution, so this was very much intended to be the "standard resources", and ES would have balanced the game around these resources being available at the start.Did the devs / map creators create most of the maps with 8+2+4+6 throughout the years as they think maps should be like this? Or because the community was obsessed with Arabia thus 8+2+4+6 became the most common set up?
there is a file from 1999 called something like "resources" that has these quantitiesDid the devs / map creators create most of the maps with 8+2+4+6 throughout the years as they think maps should be like this?
the default map is coastal, not arabia. there was no arabia obsession when the game & maps were being madeOr because the community was obsessed with Arabia thus 8+2+4+6 became the most common set up?
Well, there were people other than ES making maps over the years, no?there is a file from 1999 called something like "resources" that has these quantities
the majority of maps used that file to place the resources
they didn't really update it "throughout the years"
they finished aoe2 very quickly and moved on to other games
I believe it is the standard, because it came first (alphabetical) in the AOC Standard Map Pack. Then why is Arabia considered "standard"?

Well it is also one of the first maps on the list. There are still other open land maps tho, with or without the "standard" starting resources.
Galley micro is Feudal only and Longboat micro is exclusive to one civ while being more or less uninteractive for the opposing player so while it can be fun I don't think it is reasonable to say this is generally the case.^Someone who clearly never spent an hour doing galley/longboat micro
Naval combat is, or can be, extremely fun.
This is true but he was asking specifically about why Arabia was so popular so I didn't think the presence of standard resources or not mattered. Also(most) water maps have berries, 2 boars, 8 sheep and 4 deer and they'd function much differently if that wasn't the case
I can't hear you over people whining about unfair fish distribution.the default map is coastal, not arabia
Thankfully AoE2 doesn't have any of those!that is why the whole concept of very extreme gather-rate bonuses is a bad idea (from a civ balance perspective), because it limits the types of maps that can be made
