i'm looking for a utility that can preview random map (.rms) files so i don't have to test them in the game each time where it takes 30+ seconds to restart each one in order to see the different possibilities.
The only faster way that I know of is editing your Gamedata_x1.drs file. This file contains all FR/BR aoc maps in RM script (you can see them if you open it with notepad). What you can do is use a program called DRS Builder and replace one of the original maps (for example Arabia) with a custom map. All you need to do then is just start AoC, go to building scenarios, select Random map, select the map that you replaced (Arabia in this case) and just keep clicking on generate to see different maps generated by the RMS file.
Side-effects: Replacing one of the original maps in Gamedata_x1.drs won't let you play that particular map in multi-player. If you try it, the map will be distorted and you will go out of sync (Yep, It's happened to me). Be sure to back up the original file and then just swap them whenever you want to play. You can even have more of these with different custom maps in it.
Other imperfections: It only works well in 1v1. For 2v2/3v3/4v4, maps can be distorted or different from what you would see in multiplayer. This is because most RMS maps rely on teams from which they generate teamland, connect teams etc. and when building a scenario, all players are regarded independently (even if they are allied).
