A quote from the L_Clan_Chris interview at GGL.com..
This is very true, for over the year's players have tried to study recorded game after recorded game to understand why player's do what they do. Why did he build a Town Center there? Why is he Pulling back his unit's? Why is he doing this, doing that? What people have to understand is that eventually there is no reason why they do the thing's they do, they being the top players. They do these thing's because it is instinct. Of course there is some reason behind it. I usualy start out with a 4 Villager Market in DM Hun Wars to get the advantage, but doing it so many times, it becomes instinct for me. Sometimes, the thing's you are used to doing, become obselete. Over the year's the RM Feudal Time has been shortened, so if your used to the RM style that was played back in the 2000 days, you will most likely not last long in these days. This carries over to DM. You can no longer patro your units and focus on other thing's while you let your army fight your battle for you.
How can you change? You must come to the realization that if you want to exceed your current skill level, as in improve, you must change the way you play. Keep doing it, regardless if you win or lose, the only way to get better is to try new thing's. Sometime's watching recorded games can be useless because you have to adapt to the way Daut plays, or the way Jidba plays, this wont help you get better because these 2 players are at the top of their game because they play the way they feel. They understand what their opponent will do, they are smart players. I'm not saying that everybody else in the world is dumb, I'm saying you have to find yourself. Watching recorded games does help in some aspect's though. Why does Jidba place a castle on that hill? It will give him map control and tell his opponent that "I (Jidba) own this land!". This is a very simple example that has been taken from many top player's and is currently used by all player's in all types of play.
If you want to improve you must ask yourself the following:
What do I want to improve at?
If you want to imrove at X, what will you have to do?
example..
..Let's say X = Unit Control
In order to get better at unit control what will you have to do? Or better yet what will you have to change about your gameplay that is bad? Unit Control simply means controlling your units, but if you want to change your unit control then you have some faults in this aspect. Do you waste units? This question is the biggest problem among players. Wasting units means you are letting your units die because you are not paying attention to them, or you are not controlling them. If this is what your problem, then here is a phrase that should be stuck in your head/mind = NEVER FIGHT A BATTLE YOU CANNOT WIN. Instead, pull your units back from a battle if you feel that you will not win, which in turn will save your units for a battle later on.
Improving Unit control will also mean using Attack Stances and the "almighty Patrol key" and a few other thing's but I'm only talking about NOT wasting units for this example.
Using this method you could possibly get better at gaming, but this is just one of the many way's you can improve.
So remember kiddo's, if you choose this method, do the following:
1)Improve at X, means get better at A, B, C
2)Then move onto the next problem
Always focus on one aspect first, then move on..
AoC is one large mind game where all players must constantly adapt, what you do is continuously scout your opponent and adapt to their attempted adapt of your strategy. It is very strange when both players continuously scout, and some of the smarter players don't have the micromanagement to become top, and some have the micro without the strategy, that is what keeps staying on top hard.
