Before the patch, unupgraded Boyars had a pierce armour of 1. Now their pierce armour is 2. I asked Cysion whether this was intentional, and he told me that it was a mistake.
Mistake or not though, here's my question - what impact would Slavs now have in castle age with their newly boosted Boyars with 2 pierce armour? Do you think they would be broken? I mean, ES made the mistake of giving Goths 35% discount in infantry as opposed to 25% and that didn't prove to be gamebreaking.
Here are the facts so far:
-FU pikemen requires one more strike to kill FU Boyars compared to FU knights.
-Boyars kill FU pikemen in 5 strikes. FU knights kill FU pikemen in 6 strikes.
-X-bows kill FU boyars and FU knights under the same amount of hits. However, FU boyars kill X-bows in 3 hits, whereas FU knights kill X-bows in 4 hits.
-Boyars cost 5 less resources, and gold is easier to gather than food.
So here it demonstrates that Boyars >> Knights in practically every situation for the Slavs in castle age.
However, here are some of the other considerations:
-Boyars are produced out of castles 23 seconds, compared to 30 seconds for knights. This means that knights are easier to mass.
-Boyars are weak to monks, but they kill monks in 4 hits, whereas FU knights kill monks in 5 hits.
-Boyars have other units in their arsenal too, like cheaper siege or superior monks to go along with their Boyars.
-Since you're creating them out of castles, then chances are, you won't be researching Bloodlines. In this case, you'll be using them with 100 HP only.
My thought is this: Boyars should be used the same way that Conquistadors should be used in AoC. They are one of the best UU in castle, but once Imperial age comes along, infantry starts to become the melee unit of choice because of splash damage.
