Outposts have little use compared to the stone it costs to make them. I'm surprised FE didn't make them more interesting. Here's a few of my ideas (not fully thought through).
Sentries Upgrade
Dark Age Barracks tech. Outposts fire arrow at base range of 2 and attack of 4.
Rangers
Rangers are a unit available during the feudal age at Outposts. They have +1 higher ranger and -1 weaker attack compared to archers. HP slightly higher. Costs 50 wood and 35 Gold. Upgrade in castle age to Elite Ranger.
Stock distribution (or a better name) upgrade
Imperial Age Market tech. Trade carts can travel to outposts to collect food.
