In the Viper/Daut bo21 cast, game 7 I think, Nilpferd pointed out that Daut's scouts would auto target scouts instead of the skirms. And they did.
So how do units choose what to attack?
They attack the unit that is the closest. The reason why ranged units often target rams is because they usually go in the front. They won't switch target either until it's dead, out of range or you force them to.
Closer unit is targeted first, except when responding to an enemy attack from range.
The reason why rams seem to attract archer fire is because when an archer locks on a ram, he does not auto-switch target before this ram is dead or out of range (and because it does not move fast it is rarely out of range).
Same thing tends to make archers focus on skirms. If your archers lock on a skirm, they will keep hitting it until it is dead or out of range or until the player manually selects another target.
This is why a few plain skirms can help a Turk player in xbow battles. Also this makes Samurais or Mayan EEWs suitable for mixing with Halbs when against Paladins: Paladins tend to waste more of their firepower on stronger but less deadly to them units, while halbs do more damage. Especially Mayan EEWs, they are faster and tend to attract more of Paladin fire.
So, ROR_BzH is right, but it is an illusion, so he is also wrong.
