How do dodge arrows / projectiles like Liereyy?

My hotkeys are perfect and game knowledge and experience good. I only sucks at Micro.

Highest i was able reach was 1200 elo in 1v1, and then immediatly dropped down to 1000 again.

I played 6000+ games so im sure i can reach 2k elo if i just learn how to micro properly.

Most games is just massing skirmisher, and if i can outmicro them it at least would get 1300 elo for sure.
After my experience 99% of the times is just skirmisher fights.

I dont know if its only me or other also not understand how to micro like Liereyy.

I asked him on Twitter but he not seems to responding to it. Therefore i ask you guys here on Aoezone.net

What i learned so far is that with the grid mod i walk diagonal i somehow can dodge them.

I think the maybe move after they shoot, but im not sure.

I also want micro like him, so please give me any adivices how to become a micro nerd.

Offcorse i have the split hotkeys for dodge against mangonels, but how can i always outmicro archers anyways.

Trust me, any 2k4+ player would easily reach 2k2+ on ladder if they'd only keep patrolling their units with 0 additional micro. I mean, JonSlow does that and he's 2k3 now.

While I agree with you,although johnsnow is so extreme case, where I might be wrong, but he prolly in arabia somewhat my level or something like 1.8k, so not sure that even counts. In arena sure, if you have only monks and trebs patrol does nothing.

you have group archers then pick 1 archer and command it to move towards enemy then when its at the front of your army and under fire from enemy command it to go to the side and immediately after command to the opposite side and repeat this as fast as possible and this will dodge ballistics

Tiles. Timing. Thumb Ring - Ballistics researched accordingly

If both have TR-ballistics, u need two clicks for your xbow

1st click is when u move to a tile to trigger the enemy xbows ballistics (The way ballistics functions is the game magically has information of where your units are moving, and it calculates the exact tile your unit would move to by the time the enemy unit's projectile will land).

That was the 1st click, and now the 2nd click
2nd click is used to move away from the tile that the enemy xbow's ballistic calculated. It's very important to time it correctly, as if you make the 2nd click before the enemy xbow releases his shot (that is if you spam clicking movements/formations), then it is not guarantee that u will dodge his arrow. If the 2nd click is not timed correctly, then enemy xbow's ballistic will recalculate your xbows position and hit you successfully.

So whats the correct timing for the 2nd click?
you must make 2nd click after the enemy xbow fires his arrow at the previously calculated tile, and before the arrow actually hits you, considering you make 2nd click fast enough to dodge before actually getting hit

This last statement in bold will be easier to understand if u practice with FU briton longbows. Because they have 12 range, they will be so far that u will have more than enough time to practice the 2 clicks, 1 to actually see how longbow's arrow finds the tile u clicked to first, and 2nd click to then reposition your unit away from that tile to "dodge" ballistics


And also for completeness, the reason why spam clicking formations (split and line formation) became popular was because of lag in old games, where people could not precisely time their clicks like they can now, and so spam clicking would sometimes give you that lucky period (after enemy fire's arrow and before it lands on your previously moving tile)


Lastly, Thumb ring gives 100% accuracy, so with it you can guarantee to dodge ballistics if you master the timing of the 2 clicks. Without it, you will have chances where you automatically miss (if accuracy = 90%, u may miss 10% of ur shots even with ballistics) or even in rare cases end up hitting if the stray arrow lands on the tile where you made 2nd click/spam clicking

Well there are tons of people in similar elo thinking they know the game really well just they lack speed or something, so both options seems very legit

I disagree. at 1000-1200 level? Speed? Bro if you only keep your tc running all game and macro even slightly better with somewhat sensible decision making, you can easily reach 1400. Look at memb for instance 11, the guy is probably slower than jonslow but he beats 15xx easily. Whenever I watch him play, he might be losing badly (like real badly, -3k score at times) but he plays on and we can see his thought process to come back. Personally have had many games where I may have threw earlier but stayed on and on and won in late imp with hussar, which is something you can do if you have a somewhat decent APM (I avg 70-80 eAPM, sometimes go over 100). Important thing here is, its not your speed, but your decision making in that exact moment which can determine how the game plays out.

And as for the earlier discussion of dodging ballistics, its absolutely unnecessary. I have channelled my inner daut, and i used to always try and outmicro ranged v ranged units, but its so much better to just make mangonels, and focus on decision making. Like if its an xbow v xbow, I never try to fight it head on, I will always try to send my first wave around to his woodline or something and make a defensive siege workshop. Then if i kill 1-2 vills (or more importantly idle his wood), is where real-time decision making comes into (its RTS game after all, u can't make up your mind from start and say hey this is what i will do). Depending on his reaction, I have multiple options. If i have an eco civ like vikings, i am 100% times going back, preserving my xbow mass, making TCs at home and my eco would just skyrocket, especially if he feels he took damage and then tries to play aggressive, where I can transition to skirms, or already have a defensive siege workshop etc. But, if I am a civ like magyars or Tatars or any civ where xbows don't scale in imp, I can gamble and go in his base, look for more damage. He likely runs his army into my mangonel in my base. Speed is helpful here a lot, but decision making makes all the difference.

Again, the beauty of age of empires is the variety. What if you are a civ like ethiopians or britons? or vietnamese? You can probably fight xbow vs xbow because you will be making more xbow as they scale to arbs in imp, and also you have better xbows due to civ bonuses. How you play civ matchups come to decision making, not speed. My only advice is if you consider yourself a high APM player, make use of it in early game, do drushes, MAA-archers, etc and never fight his army head on, but try to make him multitask (send ur MAA to attack, dont chase, quick wall at home, make range-spear at home to defend) and your speed will help you greatly there as you may be able to block his vils with MAA and simultaneously defend his MAA with archer, he may run into TC etc etc.
