Not sure if there's any truth to this, but I'm told that Nomad initially got popular because it's a map where the Chinese (understandably a popular civ in China) is actually competitive.

Who's the 'true aoc community'? People who happen to agree with you? Don't be so divisive and excluding.
Byzantines do get cheaper imperial age and free town watch, both of which matter for that particular challenge. But they're probably less important than the Spanish faster building and the cheaper Blacksmith techs.
So, no, other than possibly/hopefully being easier to work with.
But seems interesting, I'll have a look at this and play around with it one of the next days I think :)
This is not particularly to knock you, but who decided that Elo should be capitalized in the AoC community? Even AOE2HD does it in its own menu! It's not an abbreviation, it's named after its inventor, chess player Arpad Elo.

I think you are overestimating how big the Conquerors is. By counting lobbies on GameRanger + Voobly + Steam, it seems like it's about 65% Conquerors, 20% Forgotten, 15% Age of Kings. So it's definitely dominant, but depending on your level of play, you can find opponents in Forgotten or Age of...
I think you are being too charitable to the Conquerors - it was most certainly a cash grab. Sure, it was pretty good, but expansions was an easy way for Ensemble Studios to get money so they could devote their main development time towards a more important project at the time (in this case Age...
