if you fast castle (reach castle age at ~28-29 villagers) you don't have the economy to produce 3 villagers every 25 seconds while making a military. Keeping 3 TCs continually producing villagers initially requires your entire eco to go food/wood, and leaves no extra resources for units.

Take what you can get. If there's a spear defending the hunters and no spear defending the gold miners, hit the gold miners.

This is one of the fundamental reasons why I feel that allowing onagers to clear trees is a mistake. Siege Onagers are not THAT much stronger than Onagers (+1 PA, +10 hp, +25 attack). For the insanely high cost of the upgrade, it's just not cost effective in any situation now.
