I played the heck out of this game the first few years it was out, starting on day 1. These are some things I remember from those days.
In AOK, it's as Chris stated where fast Castle followed by boom was popular for a while. TCs benefited from fletching, etc so it was really easy to defend...
I'd really be interested to see how pros use control groups.
I always number my TC and my scout. If you number your TC you can select it without centering on it like H does, so you can see what's going on in it while keeping an eye on other stuff -- that's super helpful during Feudal warfare...
Back in the old days, a friend of mine came up with Mongols 3 range archers with 22 pop. I think it went something like this:
1-6 sheep/boar
7-8 straggler
9-10 mill deer
11-18 lumber camp
19-21 gold mine
when you go up you switch a bunch of food vills to gold. The amazing thing is that...
You play Vikes? Gotta admit that horned helmets are the coolest development in military technology ever. I was thinking it would be interesting to do a test of Vikings vs a civ with no eco bonus doing exact same FC build, and checking res totals at 25-30 mins. People always calculate this...
Yeah it was a weird build. It was really weird doing this because I put it on reveal map, 8 player map against easiest AI so I wouldn't get attacked and have my test screwed up. That first run I winged it and thought I'm going to put 5 on wood early so I can build a lot of farms and then I...
OK, so I was sitting here pretty bored, and I thought, what if I play the same map over with the exact same build and get wheelbarrow at different stages of the build and see how it affects my resource totals.
I played Huns so house-building time wouldn't affect economy. I tried to do...
Well I just saw Bact kill a 2k player tonight with mass elephants, even though the guy had a ton of halbs and some monks. I guess every unit is viable at every level :P
This was actually before the Conquerors expansion introduced things like Bloodlines and Thumb Ring, HCs required an extra...
I would if I could figure out how to find it lol. I look in save games folder and my saved attempts at this strat don't show up in the folder. Do you have to find 1.4RC games in a different folder?
I find that if I set aside one vill for wood/buildings at the start, it's about exactly perfect to what I need. I get the wood in time to keep ahead of pop on houses. I suppose I could build the houses first, but either way it's tight. If I put that vill on food early, I'd probably have to...
I'm kinda winging it right now, but it looks something like this:
Build 2 houses at the start per normal, but then have 1 of the 3 vills build a barracks, then cut straggler and make a house every time there's 30w in the bank.
Other than the straggler vill, first 13-14 vills go on food in the...
I'm sure others have messed around with this before. I've got this to where I can make 5 militia by 6:30, and be in Feudal <12:00 with constant vill production, and drop 2 archeries. I'm sure a pro could do better than I'm doing with it, but is this strat at all viable? I can't get loom until...
The biggest tip I can think of to get better is that if somebody absolutely bootstomps you (whether smurfing or joined your game with much higher rate or whatever), don't get angry. Give him a "gg wp" or a "gg man ur good" or something and ask him if he has any tips. 9 times out of 10 they're...
I observe the opposite effect myself. If I play every day I notice I get into this rhythm where I multitask much better and am paying attention to the right thing at the right time a lot more. If I stop playing for a few days or a week, I find it takes several games to get that rhythm back.
I love this!!
What I think would be awesome is if a 2k+ player could just take a screenshot of say 10 random Arabia starting spots, and make images like these showing how he would lay out his base on that map and why. Would be the most helpful strategy post ever I think.
You can get loom and still sell your stone and have over 200g. We used to do this all the time in old AOK before AOC when TCs only cost wood. I remember I'd play Brits on Arabia and put all my vills on wood/food, trade stone for gold, and castle at like 15:30 and be able to drop like 4 TCs...
