I was teaching in a lab course yesterday at uni, and it was the students who notified us that starting today, all universities are closed by law. Lot of confusion among students, a large number of chemical/biochemical engineers require lab practices that cannot be conducted through any kind of e-learning system.
All events of 100+ people indoors or 500+ outdoors are banned countrywide. Currently 13 known to be infected according to government communication, but a lot of shops are stripped clean of wares.
Before the virus, the government refused to pay companies providing medical equipment for hospitals, withholding tens of millions of euros of payment (good thing we spent it on stadiums, right?). Now that there would be a lot of equipment needed, the government claims the companies are blackmailing the state so that they get paid. Official governmental standpoint says every equipment is available, but leaks from doctors say that doctors do not have enough protective gear. This is particularly true for non-hospital residential doctors (who people visit for smaller illnesses and stuff normally), who are supposed to be the first people who might interact with new infected. About 60-70% of these residential doctors age 60+, and thus they are extremely endangered by the virus.
Non-university educational institutions cannot cease their operations until governmental notice, issuing emergency spring breaks by schools is against the law. Every day, at around 12GMT, the emergency committee holds a press conference, so I might be back with more details.
Personal situation: Accepted my PhD admission to the US two days ago. Now the borders are closed for EU residents
