So, with NaC3 the first Big Tournament played on DE has come to an end. Not only in terms of viewer numbers, but also in atmosphere and everything around it it has been a success for sure.
But with Definitive Edition itself, we cannot be to happy because there were a number of issues that were not the best for players, casters and viewers, such as:
- Performance problems of DE itself, Units still bugging out a lot and weird pathing, Units freezing
- Problems with lag (at least in the group stages you heard quite a lot of complaints from players), even on a LAN and played on Computers that had all system requirements
- Many crashes for Casters and Players
- Spectating mode completely stopped working from time to time and Casters had to comment POVs
- Spectator Overlay is far from Capture age and also still much worse than standard spec overlay on Voobly
- Spectating features are overly complicated, it seems like it takes 5 or more clicks to do just to turn on fog of war and switch to a players POV
- Most annoying thing for me: Casters were not even able to cast the games in original speed, on spectator mode the game seems to be running slower and the Casters have to speed up the game just to catch up in time
Regarding all those problems, many questions come to mind:
Will future Tournaments will still be played on DE ?
(since it might attract more potential viewers and eventually microsoft will throw in some money)
I heard about HC3 will it be played on DE or on Voobly?
What about big tournaments like nations cup?
It seems like the game will be lagging for a lot of Players if even Nilis extra computers didnt run the game smoothly on a LAN. Also, online tournaments like KOTD would be impossible, since you cannot just switch to players POVs when spectating mode crashes.
So the ultimate question: where will the pro scene and streamer scene go?
This is where most of the community is going to play Age aswell. Right now, a Wololo Kingdoms 2.0 with the new Civs and Balance in the original game played on Voobly seems like the best solution for me. This is due to:
- ability to play new civs and new balance
- smooth performance of Userpatch
- not excluding players that do not own a high-end gaming PC
- quality of life features for community (friends lists, lobby system, seeing people online, getting balanced TGs)
- quality of life features for spectating, whch is huge for casting and tournaments
Downsides of this solution would be:
- lower graphics (but seriously who cares, even after watching NAC i personally prefer the old)
- No matchmaking system for the time beeing (this looked actually quite nice with the mappool and all)
- No or less money from microsoft
-Eventually less viewers for the old game, but i honestly dont think so. DE just repeated the HD effect in viewer terms
The alternatives to this would be going back to WK (will never happen), Microsoft improves DE in most of those aspects (unlikely) or a split up community on 2-3 platforms because DE Performance just stays the way it is right now(worst nightmare). Everyone seems to be just praying to Microsoft to make something happen, but i dont think so.....
