As well, it's not been reported so widely yet but if the infection goes beyond the upper respiratory tract to your lungs, even in those who recover there is significant scarring of lung tissue - people are being left with lifelong respiratory problems which will cause shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to infection and reduce lifespan in some cases. This is a really nasty, atypical viral pneumonia if you get it, even if you survive. You have to really hope that the infection stays in your upper respiratory tract.

That's right. UK is quite loose in detection compared to other countries. They admitted the actual number may be 10000 now. The public health has accepted the virus cannot be contained.
My son's clinical examination was also called off. I myself am in self isolation, hence bored and got myself involved in this forum. But the hospitals need doctors, and patients may die due to delayed treatments of their illnesses not related to coronavirus, so already UK hospitals are feeling the pressure.

I'm a scientist in Europe and really glad that many governments act wisely.
The communication among the scientists is suffering atm due to the fact that the meetings and so on are cancelled but it isn't that bad to have time to read papers, post stuff on aoezone and to play. 14.

This is actual pathology reports from autopsies - they describe how the actual pathology of the disease involves fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs even in the early stages, which is 'normal' for known 'atypical' pneumonias, unlike the 'standard' pneumonia which mostly damages the actual air spaces with milder fibrosis later in the healing stage. The degree of fibrosis seen here is extremely severe and resembles Pulmonary Fibrosis more than a normal infection - once your lungs are this scarred, all that you can do is a lung transplant, they won't heal by themselves.

To be clear, if you're < 60 and otherwise healthy (no diabetes, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, obstructive lung disease etc.) this virus most likely won't reach your lungs in the 1st place - but if it does, even if you recover from the acute phase you will likely be left with permanent respiratory deficits... which is something that needs to be communicated I think. (To be fair, we only recently have large numbers of recovered patients we can observe for this)

I'm one who's been taking it fairly seriously but ****... the way things are changing drastically day to day i'm actually getting incredibly anxious about it now and i'm usually quite laid back about... well everything. Obviously there's the immediate threat of illness and deaths in some cases and health systems being completely overloaded. Buti n the wider implications this is also going to cause a crippling worldwide recession. Whole industries will suffer resulting in shitloads of businesses closing leading to shitloads of jobs lost in various sectors leading to shitloads of defaulted loans and mortgages leading to another big crash. I hope I look back on this post in a couple months and think What a ****in drama queen but it is looking scary at the moment.

I've found this interview of Italian doctor extremely helpful in getting people around me conscious about the seriousness of the situation we are going to face also in my country. It's just matter of a week or two.Most ordinary people here in Finland are still denying that similar situation could happen in our country. Praising our healthcare system and doctors. But with statistically measures we can clearly note that we are sharing the path with Italy and Spain. Although personally I don't anymore believe that we can stay below the already famous "healtcare system capacity" line , every way to flattening the curve will save countless of human lifes, thus I'm trying to spread the word as much as possible right now.

Actually I think ppl and govs should learn from Macau, as a city having a close relationship with China, having only 10 cases and 0 death is unbelievable (Assuming the number is real). Meanwhile, look at some European countries with similar or even less population......

Human behaviour is the single most important factor to cope with this pandemic, more than how good is a country's healthcare system. If everyone plays their part, we can minimise death. Do social distancing for those living in countries not yet locked down, self quarantine if symptomatic, wash hands regularly. We can do it.
