would a ramp up mechanic be useful? how would you implement one?

like, say you have 2 relics and the opponent has 3, then after 40 minutes gametime, to make it over faster, an XS script applies a buff to every unit, or just trickles more gold, or something.

maybe relics could be forced to respawn somewhere on the map.

I think there's a map where relics will spawn on a hill, so control the hill = win game, maybe that makes more sense.

playing game until wood runs out is kinda boring.

i dont like the relic ramp up mechanic tbh but idk how you could really implement a ramp up mechanic otherwise. i guess battle royale is another one by forcing all players closer to the middle of the map

From the top of my head, you could have what we originally implemented in the Community Patch for the Lithuanian bonus. Back when I couldn't dynamically change the damage of knights, I had a technology in the monastery that used as a resource the number of relics, so that you had to collect them to research it. It gave the bonus damage to kinghts permanently. Later on we were able to implement the real bonus.

You could have that same idea of the relics that enables a technollogy that gives a power like the Handicap one: extra life, extra damage... From my experience modding, that's possible.

Simply resign at any point you're not having fun, or watch tournaments that have time limits (e.g. redbull).

Though, to your point, I guess I wouldn't mind playing with wonders and relic victories, at least for a little while to see if it would work out. That that functionality exists and is unused mostly kind of indicates most people are fine with long games

Players going after one single objective to inevitably win the game by dragging it out or
fighting for map control and resources until one players runs out.

I like late game a lot to be honest. What this kind of objective did in red bull time limit was that it took the pressure of actually "conquering" the oponent off the score leading players. So ultimately it would be less risky to fortify and defend to win through score than to go out and attack. I think time limit actually made the games last longer on average.
