The 3v3 World Desert Championship is over...
GamerLegion A (JorDan, TaToH, TheViper) convincingly became the champion of this innovative tournament. Congratulations to them!
But also to Suomi (Rubenstock, TheMax, Villese & Zuppi), becoming 2nd, and all the other teams who participated and provided highly competitive and entertaining games in both qualifier, main event and Sand League – which is still going on, with its semifinals and finals coming soon.
I want to keep this relatively short and focus on the overwhelmingly positive parts of the tournament.
I especially want to thank Lord patito and DaisyChain for their admin work; a tournament of this size is just impossible without a team; and SeanT, who did not only provide the funds for the WDC, but also was interested in the organisation and behind the scenes. He gave us a lot of freedom to decide, but his feedback was also motivating, and having a sponsor who is even following the process of the map pack construction with curiosity is exactly what I wished for.
In this tournament, I wanted to include everything which was possible under the given circumstances. It just had to be 3v3 on open land maps. I already had the idea of a “World Desert Championship” last summer, but the original concept was for a 1v1 tournament, so I adjusted the idea to feature both 3v3 and 1v1. While casters who only started casting during the main event had to explain it again and again, I still think it was a refreshing aspect, to make it different from other 3v3 land map tournaments like Battle of Africa.
Since we had quite little time between Two Pools 2 and Red Bull Wololo IV, the planning was very tense. A lot of work for the first 3 weeks before the final map pack was ready, but for me also the most interesting part. During the last year, I have gotten to know many excellent map creators and enjoy working together with them closely more and more. I have been involved in the creation of all maps. Sometimes only some cosmetic changes, but there was discussion between me and the creators for all of them. Both with the first 8 maps created by 5 experienced map creators (TheMadCADer, Zetnus, Chrazini, HenkDeSuperNered and cebdos), and with the map contest (with top 4 submissions by Zetnus, MingudaiLee, MyteaLancer and Rorrik), I wanted to reward those hard-working people too. And the results were amazing. With enough variety and even too many maps to pick from.
Not to forget the professionally made graphics and videos with work from Lady Swan, Nova and Lil Trouble.
We could give everyone some compensation for their work, but it really did not feel like hiring people, but rather a big community project.
Lastly, to make the whole tournament concept complete and seeing how in 2020-21 other streamers like Ellie4k, Lil Trouble, TheViper and more were able to raise big sums of donations for different charity organisations, I also wanted to incorporate this aspect. We did not get many donations ($47.15 in total), but I hope we spread some awareness and assume that some people donated directly to Trees for the Future too. For bigger tournaments in the future, I want to keep this aspect and I think we can still improve the delivery of the message.
We aim to pay the prize money to the players as soon as possible; below you can see all of the costs and rewards listed; the first section 1-5 and most of the main event player prizes are already paid.
$9000 (including fees) were provided by SeanT, who we can’t thank enough for that, and $47.15 came in donations (25 % for map creators, 25 % for the players, 50 % for Trees for the Future).

Stay tuned for the Sand League semifinals and final, if you are interested and an interview with the surprising newcomer team of Deceptive Cadence [V-VI], who managed to take 2 games from Infinite Afterpets in their first big tournament.
As a conclusion and as a little compensation for viewers and casters who had to suffer from the semifinal complications, we plan to host a $150 dream team match. The exact time and details will follow as soon as GL A confirms a date.
Then players who were registered for the WDC can sign up, confirming that they will be available on that day. The highest-rated 20 players can then be voted into a team of 4 (+1 back-up) by the public. One of the 5 maps to be played will also be voted by you.
Hope you enjoyed and learned!
