Who made the decision so you can force civ pick and not force random civ?

The only thing this achieves is people will find some mechanism to abuse and basically repeat forever.


This ruins the game with every patch, as people previously would go all cumans, or full arambai spam, and now britons/hindustanis/franks/ethiopia on ara or portu, turks, poles, cumans/hindustanis etc on arena


Now its basically a free for all for mechanism/balance abusers


And I think it should be a really simple thing to switch it, so you have the ability to force random civ rather then the other way around.


Looking fwd to next balance patch and the relief of current imbalances will be dealt with.

And it will be fun to discover new strats that works with new balance changes, but it will only last for a moment until you sober up to realize this is excactly what the next 500 games will look like

Devs to make new players actually continue playing instead of getting overwhelmed by getting random civs all the time.

Whether that should be the same for above X elo or not is another question..

It's just influence from other games I think, modern players expect from any game to be able to pick the same hero/race/champ/class/civ 10000 games in a row. Many of the new players I met on DE came from League of Legends and I think there you only ever play like 2 or 3 champions max of the billions there are in the game. I guess they wouldn't have played DE for very long if they were denied the ability to "master" one single civ, same for the SC2 guys etc.

It is a beginner friendly feature for tryhard players, when you're new to a game you don't wanna be forced to learn 40 civs to be competitive, you'd rather pick britons every game, know you have to go archers against anything because your archers are just THAT good, learn one single build and become pretty good from week one. Then in a couple of months you can become really good at doing archers.

This may surprise you but many of us just try to enjoy game. Being adult with limited time and a lot of stress the least I need after difficult day is to be forced to play one of 40 redundant civs and/or "innovative" maps that I do not enjoy. The only thing that should be random is player positions in teamgame. Not your buisness what civs/maps/etc other people play.

what is the abuse? that people can play the same civ over and over again?
you were never in a situation when you wanted to really get into 1 civ for a week? really? Do you really care that some people gain 100 elo by forcing Portuguese on Arena? why do you even care? its not like you que into the same civ picker over and over on 1300.

Its gotten a bit better with the renaming of the Indian civ, but there just are a few maps, where a few civs have such strong advantages any other civ is at a heavy disadvantage. Picking these Civs on those maps basically destroys any fun for anyone else playing.

Probably the guy who is trying to sell DLCs with new civs. I'm guessing players would be pretty pissed if they spent $10-$20 on a DLC and then can't even play the civ because they get forced to play random civ

As a beginner, it's very hard to get a feeling for the game with random civs.

I love the variety of age of epmires. But it became much more fun when I started picking civs. Only after several games with the same civ, I started to get a feeling for the powerspikes of my civ and against which civs they struggle. Only then I could start thinking about nuances on how to adapt to certain situations. That's what makes RTS fun for me.

I have a second account to play random at a lower level when I feel like it though.

if you arent above 2k then you are talking out of your ass with these "nuances" and "powerspikes" "matchups" "adapting".
Combine that with smurfing...
Someone 200 elo above you could smash you with any civ.

A bit rude, don't you think?

  1. I don't need to have 2000 elo to notice civ bonuses. Even a pleb like me notices the effect of briton archers having more range, mongols hunting faster, celt mangonels attacking faster. Are you suggesting that everyone below 2k elo is only allowed to practice buildorders and perfect execution? Asking for permission to experience the strategic part of aoe2 as well, thanks.
  2. My random civ account is at 50% winrate, no smurfing here. Sure, my chances are a better when I get one of my better civs, but I guess there are worse crimes.
  3. I'm aware that someone with much higher elo will smash me with any civ, but what's your point here?

My peak elo was 1850 and I would (edit: ) NOT say that civs play too much of a role at my level because there are many games that are decided by big mistakes.
On beginner level there are so many mistakes that usually the advantages of civ bonuses are undone within the first 5 minutes of the game.
So basic skills like keeping your TC producing, scouting, basic build orders for the first ~12 vills, getting the right upgrades or using patrol for fights are way more important than knowing what units to make with what civ, their tech trees or their bonuses.

NOT too much?
I would agree that theoretically bonuses don't play that much of a role, but there is a reason why knight civs are so dominant in lower elo. And having a bonus on your eco is simply more forgiving in your macro mistakes.

I think the system now is a good compromise for new and experienced players. If both agree, they play random. Forcing random civs doesn't really make sense, it would only benefit experienced players.

I agree with what you're saying, but my initial point still stands.

Playing 40 civs as beginner is overwhelming for me. And by picking just a few civs I got a better feeling for their strengths, weaknesses and timings, which made it more fun for me personally.

Even if I have 5 mins of Idle time, I'd have that with any civ and my Malian champs are still stronger against archers :wink:. I'm a casual gamer and it's more fun for me to win by making a choice like going champs instead of grinding out the last seconds of tc Idle time.

I would advice you to watch some of your replays to readjust your personal feelings to the real world we live in.

So is it plays too much of a role or it NOT plays too much role?

As if you trying to say civ match ups doesn't matter at that elo, you not even worth to listen. Not sure where this nonsense came from. Heard Hera saying it, that civ match ups doesn't matter in <2k elo, seems most idiots started repeating this nonsense. Civ match up matters even in 1k and that's proven fact. What hera tried to say ( I hope) that you always can get better and outplay opponent on many different aspects instead of blaming civ match up in lower elo. But that doesn't mean civs don't matter, they do. Its just more like "let's focus on where and what I can improve" and not like "Let's be an ***** and don't care about civ bonus or pretend that you can win with xbow vs ghulams in your elo".

Having 300 elo on your opponent and being able to beat him with any civ means you are just much better, not that civ match up doesnt matter, shocking, right? Jordan beating TeMO(~2.2k player) with mayans vs hindustanis, guess in 2.2k elo match up also doesnt matter with that logic, else he should have won 11

Actually very similar issues with the instances. You guys always blame your own shortcomings on some outside influences.
"I had 3 minutes TC idle time in the first 15 Minutes of the game, lost my scout to the enemy TC, am banking 500 wood in feudal age. But actually if I was Hindustanis this other guy wouldnt stand a chance against me"
... same sentiment as...
"Oh no that teammate 400 elo below me deleted only 15 out of his 20 walls even tho I spam pinged him 10 times to do it. I have to resign now"

If that was the case then low elo games would turn out like higher elo games but slower.
What you actually see in low elo is wild swings, massive vill differences, huge overreactions, inconsistencies in peoples play and stomps because these things snowball.
