Old-school player to me means having played in high level on Zone ;
+ born in 1988 or before ;
+ preferably participating in some Age of Empires II tournaments in the 1999-2006 era.

Also he never left the game to come back when it became profitable again. Not that quitting and coming back is wrong, but Daut also deserves kudos to that

dogao deserves to be in the final four i agree. he has been one of the most consistant pro players in my opinion, it's remarkable i've never saw him out of shape for years, he always delivers some great aoe2, and for that he deserves to reach the final stages in my opinion.

Wasn't dogao in the semifinal of HC 3? Its not like he never made a semi final of a big tournament. Would be happy for him as well.
I'd love for Nicov to reach the quarters at least. Lierrey and MBL deserve something bigger as well. They showed pretty big commitment to AOE II.
I'd be happy for Kasva and Sitaux as well to have some good performences at least although I fear they won't make it out of their group.

I think Lierrey wins this one. He was top 3 when everyone was playing AOE2 daily, now that people have been off for a while, I don't see anyone posing much threat. I really do hope MBL will get far though.

Oh true! I didn't notice as I didn't follow the first three Hidden Cup, I wasn't interested in watching them because of the Viking bans, plus I wasn't a fan of most of the main casters.

MbL reached the finals vs Liereyy (I believe it was KOTD 3), so he could to it again. Also I hope the people who qualified to join the main event, aka Kasva, Sitaux and slam will prove their worth and hopefully go as far as possible in the tournament!

Lately in my memories, I know him more for reaching the grand finals and almost winning

It would be cool if he gets the title, as he never has been KotD champion, but it won't be easy with all these monster players competing.

Yeah it was a tough choice but I think Hera has more realistic chances since he's been in the top 3 conversation for a while now. But having said that, Slam has been playing really well as of late and I can see him being a dark horse in this event.

I picture Slam as more of a chestnut horse personally but I like where this is going.

What kind of steed are each of the players?

Yo is a draught horse: always carries his team.

MbL is a llama: funny and generally likeable but might spit in your face.

Daut is a mule: not the fastest but keeps going and going.

I understand why Viper is still #1 on this poll, it's for many reasons but one is often overlooked:
He's the last bulwark against the new generation.

Hypothetically, in a world where Viper would have retired earlier, we players (both pros and noobs) and AoE2 fans born before '97-'98 will look like complete idiots, talking about the good old times like grandpas, praising our old experts like they were unbeatable beasts to unconvinced audiences, whilst Hera and Liereyy would slay all and win +80% of the S-tier tournaments, since 2017-18.

Viper is basically here to send a message, without realizing it:
"OK Zoomers, graaaaaaaanted Liereyy, Hera, Vinchester, Dark etc. are pretty decent, but us old chaps and damned ****s, us who ruled AoE2 scene in the early-to-mid 2010s, WE STILL ROCK, and we will still continue to dominate until we decide to leave Age of Empires II."

Honestly, I will feel heartbroken the day Viper will stop playing AoE2 expert tournaments. It will feel like the end of a chapter, without a doubt the biggest chapter of AoE2 competitive history. I know that with everything in life, we have to pass the torche and let the new generation shine.

But as a major AoE2 asshole viewer, I malignly hope Viper will reign as the AoE2 #1 as LONG AS POSSIBLE, even if it means ten more years, for the glory of our generation.
The around 1988-1996 generation I would say ; the Yo, Viper, dogao, ACCM, slam, Yellow, Juan, Nicov, MbL etc. generation with which I discovered Age of Empires II competitive scene back in 2013, with all the fond memories that goes with it.

So yea, when it comes to AoE2 competitive and cheering for players, I'm leaning more towards what the punk band NOFX jokingly sung on their 1996's EP: **** the Kids. 11

With that said, I didn't vote for Viper. I actually voted for a guy from the new generation. But it isn't Liereyy nor Hera. ​

It seems to me, especially with the list you just provided yourself, that it is not, in fact, Viper who is the outliner, but actually Hera and Liereyy are simply the only ones of a "new" generation who are frequently making it to the finals of S-Tier tournaments. Don't quote me if I'm way off, but isn't the average Age of the KotD Players who made the group stage somwhere around 30 - smack dab in the middle of the generation you mentioned?

Sure, lately it seems like it's Viper vs Hera and Liereyy, but the younger generation had to put in years worth of hard work to make it to this point, which, if anything, is a compliment to the game, a sign that age doesn't actually decide if you're able to enjoy it. Or become and remain good at it.

Don't get me wrong, I, too, don't want Viper to go away any time soon, and hope he'll remain a top contender for years to come. But my wish would be simply more players managing to place at the very top. I'm not saying it's boring, but if all of us here were to guess the Top 4 players in KotD, the lists would likely be 90% identical. That's why DauT winning Wololo 3 was such an event.

That's why I kind of hope we'll see a Winner we won't necessarily expect.
