That's why I support banning sport teams, popular individuals in addition to economic sanctions and instituions. you have to kill the dream, a parent of 8 yo Russian should realize that her/his kid can't dream about being next Daniil Medvedev, no chance to get educated abroad, they can't travel Europe, no more Euroleague wins for CSKA, no more Champions League, no more hockey or olympics. Then they will start questioning leadership.

The problem with that perspective is the following: If you get bombarded every day with the kind of war propaganda that is going on right now in Russia (and I will not repeat that nonsense here, but I guess, most people know what I am talking about), there is already no dream like that. Why would your "parent of 8 yo Russian" want their child to travel Europe, if "The West is The Enemy" (and pro-Kremlin media, which are now the only ones left) have been building up that narrative not just now, but for the past years.

And the point is not about starting to question Putin. There are a lot of people, who have always questioned Putin, and there are a lot more questioning the war, even under the heavy censorship and war propaganda they are under (in my opinion, thinking otherwise, i.e. that "most Russian civilians support the war" is falling for the same propaganda, but from the other side).
The point is, that there is not and never has been any serious alternative, one could "question Putin" for.

And finally, you won't make Putin's leadership more difficult in any way by playing into its main narrative.

Even if you buy into the argument that punishing citizens for their government's actions is justifiable, where does that line of reasoning end? Should we punish Chinese citizens because the CCP is committing genocide? Should we punish American citizens for the war crimes committed in Iraq? This isn't a political statement about those two countries (I'm American, fwiw), just using examples to demonstrate how many governments around the world have done reprehensible things that their citizenry has nothing or very little to do with.

I get your point. And I do see some merit in it.

But on the other hand, there is a possibility it may have the opposite effect. Instead of starting to question the leadership, knowing that western countries are actively trying to make my life miserable when I had nothing to do with the war may make me further buy into the nationalist propaganda.

It is the feeling of unfairness and injustice that breeds hatred. Most sportspersons who had nothing to do with war (and actually oppose the war) might find it unjust that they have to suffer too.

I guess it's hard to say for sure, but everything seems to indicate that there's an appalling number of Russians who actually support this.

I've met many Russians over the course of my life, and they were basically all without exception wonderful people, but I guess maybe that makes perfect sense since progressive Russians are obviously more likely to leave Russia for countries with less oppressive governments.

Anyway, I think the best thing we can do--short of going to actual war with Russia--is to do everything we can to show them how widespread throughout the world the opposition to this invasion is.
