Two wrongs don't make a right.

Nobody is crying over not being able to play games. But punishing Russians for the crimes of their dictator is not much different than punishing the entire family for the crime of one family member.

Today it is the boycott of Russian players, tomorrow it is throwing them out of your firms. Congratulations, you just reduced their whole identity to their nationality without even knowing their views.

The perils of cancel culture - here's an example.

I recommend his "The Brothers Karamazov". I found it even better than Crime and Punishment.

imo we need to lift up russian sports / esports players and let their voices be heard. I see russian tennis athletes protesting for example. Most people I think are against war in every country, we need to make noise and drown out the minority of war mongers. War is how the powerless minority controls space and infrastructure by subjugating the population. Even if the athletes are pro-war then we get a global discussion where they get a different perspective that is not their direct propagandized media and they gain perspective. #nocensorship #nowar

I didn't see any Russian athlete "protesting" to be honest, that's a strong word. The most I see is an instagram post that says no to war, then they repeat we are same nation with Ukraine, which is kind of source of conflict, that's the claim of Putin and justification of war while Ukraine claims exact opposite. Even some people shows their support to Russian forces in Russian TV after posting no to war story to Instagram. I think all of them afraid but not sure they are afraid of Putin or getting banned from sports organizations. I have to mention hypocrites like Ovechkin who still shows his photo with Putin on instagram profile and then shares no to war satements. So I don't find them innocent as you think, neither honest.

Do you follow Garry Kasparov on Twitter?

I would say he has been protesting against the Putin regime as an activist for years. You can find his posts, videos, interviews of years back where he is talking about the corruption in Putin's political appointments. Back when none of us cared about what is happening.

Just today, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Daniil Dubov, Nepomniatchi, and Espienko - wrote a letter to Putin asking him to stop the war. These are Russia's best chess players atm and chess is of course a big deal in Russia.

So I would call this protesting yeah. And it is important to remember that it takes a lot of courage to protest like this in an undemocratic country. You're risking a lot. It's easy to protest in Berlin against a Russian war in Ukraine. It is not that easy to protest in Moscow. Writing a protest letter might mean nothing in the democratic west, but we have to remember it's not the same case in Russia.

To those who are being vocal, we should respect their courage instead of doubting their sincerity, and we should hope that more will raise their voice just as the new generation of chess players have raised today.

Imagine you are standing opposite a russian athlete that is subject to decades under 1 ruler and has been fed propaganda from the time they were a child. They wanted to compete in sport with other nations instead of kill them. They finally meet the other peoples and their leader all the sudden declares wars and wants to murder everyone they just met. Do we smile and embrace them and teach them better? or do we show them our teeth and attack them like the dogs in the tanks? people are different dont go 1tc on everyone

Kasparov is not a new thing, he has been like that for years, he is not an ordinary Russian also, an Armenian and half jew, was member of Liberal party in communist years.

And about second sentence, I am from Turkey, you must be kidding, Putin is an angel when it comes to free speech compared to us.

You guys have no idea about east and middle east, living in your cozy environments and making statements from other side of world. Embrace and teaching don't work at this side of world, tried and proven many times, this part of world enjoys powerful statements, belief in that they can rule the world, as they lead before, ages ago, and suprisingly people loves it, you can bring down a dicator, they will choose another one, and another. Not gonna spend my time to explain, just check the map from west of Turkey till Japan then remember the first thing that comes to your mind about political situation of each country. You won't find anything related to your embracing democracy. That's why you keep failing and leaving countries while people hanging from planes. Who would have thought democracy in Afghanistan, did you really think that you can change in 10 years one of the most islamic fundamentalist country of the world?

This is an attack on democratic and other system failures and usually manufactured off of wars/conflicts the majority of the people didn't want. This is the whole problem. The way we serve the majority is by maintaining an understanding that mass populations are not 1 entity but made up of millions of individuals that think differently, to teach an ignorant enemy is better than winning 100 wars because the prospects of perpetual peace is exponential. I want 1 word going into space not 1,0000 countries fighting. its such a huge waste

We are on same page Spring, but the difference is you are not aware how people think, how things work on that side of world. That's why I am not living there anymore, living in my cozy apartment in center of Europe, worrying about gas prices is a good life. Democracy doesn't work when majority believes in power and being dominant, it actually becomes a tool suppress minorities.

Garry Kasparov has some serious balls (seen in his chess style too).

I remember some vid on the net that dates back to the mid 2000s, where he speaks out against Putin I think in public, then you see a car with policemen come and hall him off. Don’t think he can ever go back to Russia because of stuff like that (believe he has lived in NY or St. Louis since?).

Whoever speaks out against Putin while living in Russia has some balls like you say and wish them luck tbh.

The world is becoming a more dangerous place, friends.

The days of wars being "Cold," are coming to an end.
For all its failings the post WW2 era has been one of relative peace. No more.

Multi-polarity with nuclear-capable states is beginning.

The rhetoric and actions from political and military institutions across Europe (EU and Russia,) and Anglosphere alike are unmistakably beating the drums of war (for China, Russia vis Ukraine is but a more recent flashpoint.) Regardless of why/how events unfold, people like you and I will suffer. Our defense industries and politicians who exit their political careers and find themselves in well payed positions of major energy/military corporations will ensure war occurs. Everyone is going to suffer from the coming inflation that this conflict is causing -- from the direct effects, and indirect effects as other nations attempt to diversify and ensure they can never - EVER - be so dependent on the type of banking access/markets again.

It is unlikely anyone posting in this thread will have any real input on how these decisions are made. The propaganda is the least of our worries. We are witnessing a global conflict in real time as NATO arms Ukraine -- the only difference is the ending isn't written yet. Yet it's only a small back-drop to a looming EU/NATO/AUKUS/India China conflict.

Stay safe and if possible make sure you/your family don't live near a military base.

And again I saw all the cruel things which are done under the sun; there was the weeping of those who have evil done to them, and they had no comforter: and from the hands of the evil-doers there went out power, but they had no comforter.

So my praise was for the dead who have gone to their death, more than for the living who still have life.

Yes, happier than the dead or the living seemed he who has not ever been, who has not seen the evil which is done under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 4:1 - 4:3

greetings to my fellow human beings out there - I wish I could speed up time to see all the sources of power decay at the same lifetime. All these thousends of years full of annoing skirmishes so that benefiting sources can hide behind it - use it for the personal value and power raise

Banning Russians from participating in huge sports events will directly hurt Putin.

Banning the few Russians that play Aoe2 is not gonna change anything.

The reason we are doing sanctions is to either hurt the top leaders in Russia, or as a tool to change the general opinion of the average russians. The leadership in Russia will not be hurt at all by banning Russians from Aoe2. The average russian doesnt even know the game exist.

The only thing a ban will do is to hurt the few Russians who has done nothing wrong other then play the game they love.

Not really, today there was an interview with Russians in youtube and general sentiment was: "I am not happy about sanctions, but yeah we will eat less in restaurants, may be wear same clothes one more year, but if this is what we need to achieve bigger things, be it".

I know very well this sentiment from 70s turkey, when Cyprus invasion happened in 74, 3 years later party in power got their historical highest vote although UK and USA sanctions existed for 3 years, and they never reached same voting percentage later.

That's why I support banning sport teams, popular individuals in addition to economic sanctions and instituions. you have to kill the dream, a parent of 8 yo Russian should realize that her/his kid can't dream about being next Daniil Medvedev, no chance to get educated abroad, they can't travel Europe, no more Euroleague wins for CSKA, no more Champions League, no more hockey or olympics. Then they will start questioning leadership.

But on the other hand banning Tolstoy and Dostoyevski books and similar actions are idiotic.
