All dark age eco bonuses should be removed from the game. They add no strategic diversity, players do the same strategy just with one-three less vills faster uptime and other player has to play from behind during early feudal if his civ doesn't have such bonus.

Maybe, but it helps some civs which struggle to compete with a powerful army comp in imperial age. For example, Celts is one such civ. They do not have FU ranged units or Cavalry, and most of the times have to play Infantry Siege in imp which has its cons. So their wood bonus helps them greatly throughout the entirety of the game, especially in dark and feudal age.

Some:
- Celts need Plate Barding Armour

- Arena is the best map

- Shrivamsha riders are fine

- Give full firing accuracy to Longbows (maybe with warwolf tech if a cost is needed)

- Mongol Castle Age UT is fine

The amount of relics generated on Arena should not always be five. It should be random between 1 and 5.

Actually that's an interesting idea, maybe could change this monk+scout meta a bit, I'm not sure what clowns think of it, but wouldn't be surprised if clowns themself would love to make some more variety there.

Clowns are so much in love with arena, they wouldn't be happy to change it. It is like you are in love with an ordinary girl but still the most beautiful human being for you in the world.

archers should be slower than infantry, specially in feudal and castel.
archers should not kill elephants with hit and run. doing the first point, this would change too.
bring elephant power back.

Berbers will get their vill speed nerfed so it applies from Feudal onwards.

Alright this may not be that unpopular, but there's way too many civs. Way too many. It should've ended with the DE release civs and even then you could argue that there was still too many. I imagine it's only a matter of time before Chinese gets the Indians treatment and gets split up into 3 or 4 different civs in an upcoming DLC soon. Same could happen to Vikings as well and there's probably room for some more obscure European "empires" in the future with the way they're going about it.

In a similar vein, that the game (and AoE1) could cover the whole world with 35 civs and have less Eurocentrism, e.g. Steppe Lancers replacing Knight line in Steppe civs instead of having both

Are you watching twitch or on youtube? Maybe if watching on youtube and skipping start it might be good, although for me the start of arena is just toooooo boring, both for playing and watching. 9 vills would help a bit, although most games at least I have watched recently just go to imp into treb war and someone resigns after losing treb war, like 25min(real time) game to see some relic and treb fighting. Some arena games can be really good, but eitehr im unlucky either that's how most games nowadays that either it's trush(is fun for some time, but gets bit boring seeing same thing again and again) either relic fighting into treb war. Also not a plus that few civs are really dominant in arena which is tournament's arena games are even more boring than it should be (yes, Turks vs Bohemians, yay, super fun).

At my level (1400), they play out the same with scouts and spears. Just one takes place in Feudal Age, and one in Castle Age.

I consider KotD to be the most boring major tournament, by far. Watching 500 Arabia games with largely the same strats and civ choices over and over again could well be part of the torture programme at Guantanamo.

At least there won't be a pond and fishing ships/fighting with fire ships every second game, sand>water

I really dont know. why the other editions didnt were boring? Arabia is special. and with bans and snipes, maybe we could see some really good games.

My unpopular opinion is that current civ balance is straight up bad. Not even mediocre. Look, we have just had a tournament with a best possible variety of maps: closed, open, semi-closed, water, hybrid, chaotic. And yet only half of the civs came into play. And amongst other half of the civ pool, there a few unicorns that are borderline broken.

Noone on Earth will convince me this is a good civ balance.

KOTD will be fun, just we might need a special balance change ONLY for this tournament which allows non-eco civs to keep up vs eco civs

I liked how open KOTD arabia map version used to be, it encouraged aggression, but what actually happened was non-eco civs (like spanish or goths for example) would straight up die in feudal age to eco civs

Its really unfair if you are say Spanish vs Vikings (post thumb ring nerf even). You know your winning window is Castle age with Conqs Mangonels and the only way you can get to that is if you have a somewhat successful tower rush in feudal age. Otherwise the viking player just kills you with better eco and more units. What's funny is that this makes your strategy predictable, so Viking player can prepare accordingly and just full wall in dark age (if they have safe stone, you can probably call gg as they will get to castle age safely, drop a castle, most like imp and bracer wins them) or go MAA archers or simply bum rush your tower down 11

If Memb wants more civs to be successful in KOTD5, he needs to make some sort of balance change otherwise the top meta civs on arabia will only be picked (and I will list the D tier or lower civs below)

Civs never picked : Spanish, Goths, Burmese, Dravidians, Bengalis
Civs maybe picked : Magyars, Celts, Koreans, Malians, Slavs

Did I miss any? All the above civs either have no eco bonuses or have a slow Halb-siege comp which is not viable on arabia.

Hell, even excluding all of those civs, there's still 32 to pick from. Is that really going to stop KOTD from being successful?

from a player's perspective they probably won't like it that much. Because you can't really prepare anything special, it's arabia

We will still always see the meso civs and eagles, the faster imp arb play for xbow civs, the same knights siege push from the cav civs to deny that, or a kt/camel monk fiesta. Not too much room for unique units unless if the game goes super late. Longswords? if we see them even once I call I will be happy 11


It's still arabia only, so even the civs at the middle of the barrel are not ideal in the knockout stages. Like for example, Hera won Viper with Mayans vs Tatars in NAC4 on arabia and the game was completely equal until Hera went for a faster imp and Viper had to play all in castle age, which he did really well - the counter raids, defense with skirms, castles, he did everything he could but the S-tier civ still won

Just goes on to show that the top 4-6 civs will always be banned, and the next best civs will be selected. The civs in the middle are likely selected only as mindgame counterpicks (like Mongols is a good civ to lame the hell out and get a cheeky win, but you might wait and pick Berbers as a potential counterpick in your draft)

There are certain civs that players will always want in their draft though after the S-tier picks : Byzantines good vs any civ, Saracens for market play, Mongols Vietnamese for laming, Japanese for a MAA gamble win, etc.
