WARLORDS $30,000 Announcement

Start sharpening your swords and raise your armies - another great encounter is approaching. The greatest warlords are getting ready for a showdown.

A brand new tournament is on the horizon, and we are excited to present to you, Warlords, a unique 1v1 tournament with a large selection of classic maps and a refreshing twist from the conventional game opening.

Warlords will take place between Thursday the 10th of November and Sunday the 27th of November, with a qualification stage happening one week prior, from Saturday the 5th of November to Sunday the 6th of November, allowing up to 256 players to participate.

The main event will feature sixteen players - eight players will qualify based on their Red Bull Wololo: Legacy results, while the remaining players will qualify through the qualification process.

Having made Red Bull Wololo: Legacy top 8 the following players have already secured qualification for Warlords main stage: Hera, JorDan_AoE, Liereyy, MbL, Mr_Yo, TaToH, TheViper, Villese.

Our warriors will be fighting for a prize of $30,000.00 and must battle through the group stage before reaching the final playoffs to get a cut of the treasure.

Maps & Settings​

The event will feature a vast and diverse selection of maps, divided into seven groups based on their type.

Each game will start with a minimum of nine villagers on the map, providing more fast-paced games without sacrificing strategy.

Looks great, I love the classic map diversity. I'd only make 1 change in the map pool, removing either Coastal or Scandinavia and put Golden Swamp instead. It's a map with way more strategical options and by now I'd consider it classic too.
And I'd second the idea to reward people making it in last 2 rounds of the qualifier.
Extra point for the announcement 1 month before the event.

I love the concept, in fact I had a very similar concept with map categories (even including the "chaotic" map category although I named them "mad") planned for a noob level tourney but was too lazy busy to realize it.

The only suggestions I'd have so far have already been mentioned:

• I'd prefer a seeding/invitation mechanism that's not centered around one single tournament, particularly if it is an EW tournament. I.e. don't use RBWL results only but rather aoe-elo or ATP ranking
• Reward the last qualifier round with regard to prize distribution

Edit: I'd also prefer e.g. Golden Swamp over Coastal but it's a really minor thing.

 

Finally a tournament featuring Yucatan (I LOVED that map as a kid)

 

The seeding is not done with Redbull event, the TOP 8 get invited but not seeded by the event, once we get the top 16 qualified then they will be seeded, it will be explained in the handbook soon.

About the prize, there will be some reward from at least the players that lose in the deciders to get in the main event, that was already in consideration, not public how much because it won´t be from the 30k, it will be something else that will be added when the final decision is done.

About some maps, well there is always some maps that everyone prefer more than others but that subjetive as well, we debated alot about the maps with the team and that was the decision that was voted by the majority, do you think i choosed all those maps? Kappa.

Looking forward to this! 9 villagers start is an interesting touch, but also not «un-tested», so I’m sure that will be fine. It might even give some underplayed civs some more screen time!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Coastal in a competitive setting, so I’m looking forward to that. In my eyes, that is kind of Nomad without nomad though, so part of me would have admittedly wanted to see Cenotes instead. But anyway: Hype!

The map categories thing also seems really good and innovative but also intuitive. Looking forward to seeing it all play out.

Just one question: Will this be a special oasis script? Because the known oasis to me always felt like a closed map. But maybe you made the middle wood smaller or with paths so walling off to the side is harder? Thanks for answering.

The classic oasis back in the day when one player could walk till the middle and fish boom like crazy while other player didnt have a path to walk through the forest.

Is two days and sadly there is no more time in calendar, wanted use 1 week more but no time, was this system or no qualifier at all, so I think this is the best we could get.

Given that if you can’t make 1 specific time on Saturday you can’t partake, it is in reality 1 day and that is really disappointing.
The fact that the calendar, which was never made public, won’t allow for timely qualifiers to take place is ridiculous really - it’s been oversaturated and to the detriment of those just below the top level who can’t justify holding every possible waking moment for tournaments.

You can support a better and more organised system that doesn’t over saturate events to allow better playing conditions. This clearly isn’t a one man issue, but I would hope with robo returning that we could see a genuine improvement to the tournament scene. Recently the lack of communication and clarity in what’s going on has been poor - eg being promised the tournament calendar for goodnwss knows how long and never receiving it. Or even having a significant bias against certain proven tourney hosts for prizepools.
For me, that does mean you have proper qualifiers and move away from this 1 day stuff. Plus you have less S tier tourneys to not over saturate the year, so people can prep and participate properly, even when they don’t only play aoe2 - that’s how the next group will break through and make a better and more competitive scene.
I would hope that as one of the biggest hosts/streamers that you would see the sense in this going forwards.

 

I'd suggest shaving off a couple hundred $ from the top and distribute it between the last two rounds of the qualifier. It's good to incentivize other players that have the will to compete, instead of hoarding even more funds strictly around the top16.

This is amazing! Memb is an outstanding example of actively listening to the community and doing everything is his power to give what we the community wants/needs.

Sure, other tournament hosts do that as well but i think they can still look at this thread and really learn how it should be done.
