WARLORDS $30,000 Announcement

Start sharpening your swords and raise your armies - another great encounter is approaching. The greatest warlords are getting ready for a showdown.

A brand new tournament is on the horizon, and we are excited to present to you, Warlords, a unique 1v1 tournament with a large selection of classic maps and a refreshing twist from the conventional game opening.

Warlords will take place between Thursday the 10th of November and Sunday the 27th of November, with a qualification stage happening one week prior, from Saturday the 5th of November to Sunday the 6th of November, allowing up to 256 players to participate.

The main event will feature sixteen players - eight players will qualify based on their Red Bull Wololo: Legacy results, while the remaining players will qualify through the qualification process.

Having made Red Bull Wololo: Legacy top 8 the following players have already secured qualification for Warlords main stage: Hera, JorDan_AoE, Liereyy, MbL, Mr_Yo, TaToH, TheViper, Villese.

Our warriors will be fighting for a prize of $30,000.00 and must battle through the group stage before reaching the final playoffs to get a cut of the treasure.

Maps & Settings​

The event will feature a vast and diverse selection of maps, divided into seven groups based on their type.

Each game will start with a minimum of nine villagers on the map, providing more fast-paced games without sacrificing strategy.

I think 9 is the wrong number and it should be 8 Villagers and a house because it has less impact on Civ balance. For example Mayans are still housed at the start instead of everyone being housed but Mayans with +villager, also Huns are going to be up a villager every game because they will be the only Civ with food that is not housed. Other then that, great!

 

Cant hide my happiness about this whole concept. I think the entire "map categories" thing is a game changer that comes to stay. As the "global bans" and other tournament traditions established by succesfulness. Classical election of map is nice to me. (Just want to get sure of fair Coastal generations)

The 9 vils start is a nice experiment at S-Tier tournaments. Still closer to RM but with some new fasterand spicy flavour.

I love this idea. This might be the best tournament of 2022, honestly.

 

Probably everybody would have liked KotD this year too, but this is also something almost everybody wanted.
Generally, I like the map pool, especially having Migration and Border Dispute back as alternatives. The 9-villager start also adds something that makes it quite different from TTL 2 which should be not long after it.

Some maps (Oasis, Black Forest and Bedouins) I personally like more in TG than in 1v1 and I would have picked RF over Hideout, as that's more "classic" to me. I would also have picked classic Land Nomad (with lumber camp start) instead of Bedouins or Steppe to have more variety in the Nomad category.
Socotra and Land Madness as some of the newest maps in the pool could be argued about whether they are "classic" already, but especially Socotra adds something, so it's good to be included.
Coastal is probably the most uncertain map, as it hasn't been in any big tournament since a long time.

First of all any new tournaments are great and I assume most people will be pretty excited for this one. But I have to say I think this takes the mixed map idea a bit too far. If you look at the last great mixed map tournament, NAC3, 6/13 maps were open land maps; here we have way fewer and that feels like a mistake. Open land maps are simply the best and should be given deference in big tournaments. My suggestion would be to make game 1 fixed Arabia and then let players choose the rest. That would at least give us two open land maps per set (assuming the players will pick the open land map group which I'm quite confident they will).

I'm sure this will still be great, but I'm personally prepared to tune out like 25% of the games most likely.

 

Open land maps are simply the best and should be given deference in big tournaments.

Case closed, the amount of evidence behind this statement is overwhelming and I doubt anyone can even dare to oppose this view.

//Edit - just to add, I'm dumbfounded by the fact that even though only 2 of the 21 maps start with walls, and 7 (33%) have water but only 2 (<10%) will be played mostly on it, people still find reason to complain. I am very pleasantly surprised to see an event with a variety of maps from Memb, props to him and I wish him the best in this event.

Critiquing is not complaining. I will watch and enjoy this tournament but that doesn't mean it has perfect settings not worth discussing.

As far as best maps are concerned it's obviously subjective but there's a reason Arabia is the most played and favorite map of pro players and why for years many if not most big tournaments had G1 fixed as Arabia.

 

I am interested in knowing how the map categories actually work in drafting. Or is it just for listing?
If Player A chooses map category and Player B chooses one of the 3 maps from the category (and then vice-versa), that would be interesting. So for a best of 5, you would get 5 different categories of maps.

 

I'd suggest shaving off a couple hundred $ from the top and distribute it between the last two rounds of the qualifier. It's good to incentivize other players that have the will to compete, instead of hoarding even more funds strictly around the top16.

Diverse map pool could be strength when there is this new settings, 9 villagers start, and players will have chance to form a new meta.

 

I'm more excited for this tourney than pretty much any other tournament since hidden cup. Great concept, great map pool, love the 9 vil start, almost zero complaints.

Great idea to have different categories of maps.

Very excited for all the classical maps - super happy to see them played out competitively again.

As with everything, there'll always be some people who won't be fans of classic maps like BF or Baltic or Oasis. But keep in mind, there will be a next time.

Depending on the success of this tournament and how it will be received by viewers, the next time we can substitute modern maps instead of the classic ones (like for example, Fortified Clearing instead of Arena, etc etc) and see how people like it as well.

Anywho, the concept of categorizing maps is very interesting, will allow for players to choose between 3 different maps under one category, and also make civ drafts and mind games more complex (For example, a player like Vinchester might love Arabia, but Daut can pick Atacama in the Open maps category and suddenly if Daut has his favorite civ Bulgarians in his draft and Vinch chose maybe Mayans, suddenly his civ pick for open maps will not look good and suddenly a 50/50 set Daut vs Vinch could favor Daut even though general census might say Vinch should be better in an open map vs Daut) Lots of mind games can be played, suiting different players and different styles.

 

Good news! See the world cup or this nice tournament. That will be the question. GL!

Only thing I'd suggest: don't use red bull for seeding. Already some players have gotten a LOT of free invites/seeding to tournaments from red bull. This is a faster start, but it still seems it'll be more like RM than EW. Why not use the tournament-elo web site? You can put a caveat for activity, but it's the most accurate and simplest method for seeding out there and reflects recent tournament performance.

Yes, but not this year. So probably people have to wait half a year or so more for it.
As of now, I would expect some S tier tournament right after this, then TTL 2 in early 2023 and then KotD could be any time after that.
