Appreciate the comments of Chinese viewers here, nice to get some insight on the streaming scene.

Yeah, somehow yes and somehow no. Unfortunately some comments read as they are from the exact same viewers that FatDragon is complaining about as toxic, that might be relativising their own behaviour and trying to find excuses. To be fair, AoEzone is not the most wholesome place itself, so I assume some of these viewers are certainly active here as well.

- This is vivi. I started playing aoe in 2006, when I was in the final year of primary school and saw my cousin playing this game. This is the start of my gaming addiction for the following 6 years - I eventually got addicted myself and spent all my time playing aoe2 in internet cafes. During this period, I didn't go to school and didn't do any work at all. Because of my aoe2 addiction, parents refused to talk to me and didn't even let me go back home. They would throw my food straight into the bin to punish me. I had nowhere to go but sleeping under the street bridge or internet cafes; I was constantly hungry, and the only thing I could consume was tap water from internet cafes (*in China, tap water isn't intended for human consumption); when I craved a cigarette, I had to collect cigarette butts from other people.

I had the same issues with game addiction as he had, but with aoe, sc, civilization games and the like, and some mmos too, i would play as much as 16 hours a day! But, my parents never abandoned me. I had to go to a psycologist and psychiatrist for a long time. Also, i guess between addiction to drugs and games, most people prefer the gaming one... much less destructive and impactful i guess

Holy cow, vivi's parents are TERRIBLE!

Or perhaps they are just giving their point of view because you were only shown Vivi's version who obviously is going to portray himself as a victim.

Thanks for the translation. He seems deeply affected by the community calling him a noob.
HOW THE HELL can you call a top 16 a noob ? Is that use of "noob" word the same in every communities ?

The median elo 1V1 is 1010.... My god, if a top16 is a noob, then 99,99% of players are noobs...
just a stupid joke ?

vivi's uneducated play a big role in his failure,
if u compared with vivi and yo's streaming, yo never be such toxic as vivi, maybe because yo is highly educated, and yo's university is really good. if the chat be toxic to vivi, vivi will toxic back but yo don't, and this kind of stuff just weave a tangle web for everyone. he need to change, and practice more. despite lyx god like performance in the 2v2 world cup, he will still receive lots toxic from the chat, it's Chinese streaming community, there's no solution to this, so he do need to change himself!
but there's still merit, if u praise him in the chat, and u will get free guidance from vivi, it's fun.

Exactly. There's a Chinese idiom saying, "Those who appears miserable/unfortunate, usually has something obnoxious about them";
and vice versa, "Those who appear obnoxious, usually have something miserable/unfortunate about them".

Heavy toxicity and backlash from viewers, because of his arrogant and improper streamer behavior, which is caused by poverty and under-education.

The idiom basically sums up Vivi's situation. Wish he'll learn how to be a better streamer, get more friendly viwers, and just be happy in the future

I feel like the biggest nerf to vivi was the DE and the reduced lag, most of the matches i saw viper losing to him on voobly was cause viper couldn't quickwall and complete his mastapieces, most of his matches were chaotic cause microing like nerd was missing on his games.

I am not saying that vivi wasn't a really good player but certainly he never got a good tournament result, just like hoang he was just farming points in the ladder and at some point tournaments wins or results is what actually matters when we are talking about the best players.

I think that vivi needed more time improving and learning, instead of thinking of himself as a top 5 player, in the 2x2 tournament with mr yo the lack of experience of vivi was notorious, they were close to lose to 1900 players cause of that.

Anyway it is sad to lose a pro player for such reasons, cause he was relatively new to the pro scene and his fully potential wasn't reached, but this is aoe2 and eventually everyone comes back, maybe he just needs a break to figure it out where he was at the game, cause moving to aoe4 feels like he just want to do what he does without any external pressure from his viewers or expectations.

Vivi seems very talented and his misfortune is a sole tragedy. He is imperfect as we all are. And his imperfections got reasons that we should not blame him on. Since he is still young, he still got time to figure things out. I shall wish him all the best.

That's basically the definition of victim blaming. Because he is "poor" and "under-educated" (what the actual **** has that to do with this topic and the toxic behaviour of people in his streams) he has this toxic viewers.

And to be fair, this "Chinese idiom" is just stupid and superficial. Don't trust so much on what people said hundreds of years ago. We live in 2021 by the way. Not the time anymore to reproduce old stereotypes.

Dude, don't you read thread. If you are unable to follow:
Step 1- Vivi compares himself with Yo and Lyx many times
Step 2- Vivi complains chat do not treat him same way they treated YO
Step 3- Chinese users in this thread claims, Yo answers chat in more polite way, while Vivi takes approach of swearing, and they say that's due to how they grow up and education.

To be honest, seems pretty normal reaction by people. I don't really like this racist approach and prejudgment, which is "Chinese chat is toxic". Yeah but why it is toxic to Vivi, not Yo?

Probably because Yo is more successful in tournaments and thus a "better person to identify" with for people with low self-esteem which implies a bigger affinity to nationalism and state-regulated capitalism as well.

From what people even tell in this thread here, they seem to think this way: "You are worth something for the people if you are just successful enough, but dare you if you are poor and uneducated, then your are just a piece of dirt."

It's the shaming of the poor, to make oneself feel greater and better. Basic principle: "Hunch up, kick down."

Your argument is terribly wrong:

1. as I said in previous posts. Vivi was the most popular Chinese AOE streamer, probably earns more than most of the European players, people being toxic on him is definetely not because he is poor. People also liked him much more when he was really poor and did stupid things.
Even at the beginning of this year, Vivi still earns more than Yo, so the tournament results is definitely not the sole factor of his popularity drop.

2. in vivi's own statement, those "toxic people" are with him when he first enter the scene as a prospect, it is those people who give money to him and contribute to his later success, but they also take him to brothels, gambling sites and make demands on him. Vivi is at least partly responsible for not choosing the proper friends, but on the other hand he may not have many choices.

3. Vivi is still childish and unmature in many ways (also why he's so popular), he has strong self-esteem to prove himself better than others, sometimes feel insecure and want more money, so make big statements to draw attention and refuse to become a rank-only casual streamer, on the other hand he refuse to practice when chat ask him in unfriendly way, refuse to face his failure and move on etc.
People just start to be wary of all that.

IN MY OPINION the education and family is the deeper reason that Vivi did not grow up, organize his life and realize his full potential, it's unfortunate and ofc I only wish him to get over all these obstacles, I apologize for not being more polite in sayin' this but it's definitely not victim blaming.

4. Stop ranting stereotypes as it won't solve the problem. When I say Vivi's unfortunate experience is due to his education and family, I suggest the society were having these problems and need to gradually improve to help these victims of lacking education or family violence, but not to pretend that those victims are born "immune to all repercussions".

Wish you American liberals (if you're of Chinese lineage then it's more tragic) can use same plot when explaining mental pressure and difficulties for those NBA stars and just blame the society for being toxic towards poor and less-educated : )

I was gonna reply to his arguments about Chinese idioms but then I guess better not.

I'm intrigued how some people are so sensitive nowadays that quoting idioms which are not even sweeping statements still triggers people.

Semisky said:

I agree with Semisky. The idea of the idiom is not about putting blame on anyone. Rather, it's about the tragic nature of how one misfortune could shape someone in a way that made them more prone to future misfortunes.

You heard from Chinese community themselves. You can decide for yourself whether Vivi himself is partially responsible of the disproportionate backlash he got from viewers. What I'm saying is, how he acted as a streamer definitely caused some of that backlash.

Whether that backlash is justified is another matter.

Personally, like I said in post about Lyx, I never understand toxicity towards streamers. If someone doesn't like a streamer he/she's free to just leave and not watch.

Of all the things they could do on the internet, those people chose to be toxic. :whatever:

WTF is that take?

Are you implying that Chinese viewers are incapable to make the choice of the streamer they want to follow other than by pure tournament performance and based off "nationalism and state-regulated capitalism"?

Personality and chat atmosphere are by far the two biggest drivers of an audience. Hera and Viper have very different personalities and quite a lot of people who watch one of them do not watch the other, irrespective of tournament results.

Whether Vivi's on stream persona is partially the result of his background/upbringing/etc. is an entirely different question altogether.

You really should stop being so patronizing every time you post on the forums.

I would say tower nerf affected him the most, because I think he used to be considered the best tower-rush player at some point. He managed to reach semi-final in KoTD 2 with his deadly tower rush.

Something I don't understand though, is that why would people tune to his channel and flame him, if people don't like him. I would just stay away from the streamer's channel if I don't like this streamer.

As a result, Chinese community just lost one more pro player after lyx, which is a pain.
Mr.Yo cannot even find a qualified player to play 2v2 with him in tournaments now :frown:

aoe2 is such a old, golden, but fragile game, losing any single pro player always causes me to cry :frown:
