Phew, seems like he experienced really much toxicity and sometimes too less (mental) support by the community as well by their team captain and other people.

Makes me sad to read this, to be honest. Hope he is fine overall though and wish to him that he finds something that occupies his time with something he likes.

1) Old viewers might lower their expectations
2) There might be some new aoe4 viewers who dont know his past

I question that. At least there is the possibility with some people in the AoE2 community not liking AoE4 to actually leave them behind and start a new streaming career with AoE4. And I wish him the best with it. Also without the pressure of the toxic part of his community. May he be playing as he would like.

pretty much what HongeyKong said. He only briefly mentioned his reasoning to quit aoe2 (hence I named it "life story"). Some of his chat commented the same thing as what you've posted. Let's see how it goes with his aoe4 stream ^^

I am not surprised about Vivi's decision. Chinese internet is generally more toxic than in the West. Remember when Lyx said he was going to quit AOE2 as a public player and only play privately between friends?

This was when he and Yo were a strong team but had some recent defeats. If even these top Chinese players faced pressure and backlash from fans I imagine it's worse for Vivi. While Vivi sh*talking back probably didn't help, I don't blame him as this sort of thing is persistent and you might as well fight back. Being nice won't make the trolls go easy on you - refer to Lyx.

Hope things get better for him in the future.

He has been underperforming for the last idk 2 years, just put too much pressure on himself thinking he was a top5 player. Picking 1 civ in ranked games wasn't helping either.

The tower nerfs hit him hard.

EDIT: Also Vivi once (jokingly according to his post) claimed himself to be a Top3 player. I guess this also drew him more **** when he failed in tourneys.

This is the exact opposite of what I meant. My point isn't that any of the top16 wouldn't deserve his spot, or that he wouldn't qualify normally (there would likely be upsets, but not many). Skillwise, those players deserve their positions. But it's to make sure players practice before the event, and if they go through the qualifier they take the event more seriously. And if they still want to play qualifier without practice, then there would be more upsets, which isn't bad for the tournament either.

This event has about a 50/50 chance of being won by Lierrey who notoriously plays/practices the least of any of the top 16.

The translation is really good and trustworthy. I’m native in Chinese and have been following some comments on Chinese forums/streams. I can’t understand how on Earth would you be that toxic to the pros. Even when players get to RO8/RO4 in S tier tourneys there are still a lot of criticisms and toxic comments, let alone anything less than that. It’s totally understandable that at some point Vivi must feel streaming (especially after tourneys) is too emotionally taxing. Hope he still has a good life and earns decent money after this.

It's pretty tough reading he's had such a rough experience with aoe. I had my struggles with gaming in my youth and, looking back, I had come to see it almost as an addiction (8h/day almost every day playing MMORPGs!), but reading this puts things into perspective. What Vivi went through due to his obsession with the game is beyond belief. Rather than wishing for his return I hope he manages to put his life back together and find something he considers meaningful and fulfilling to do. Whether streaming/gaming is a part of his life afterwards is secondary.

There's really not much difference between someone who obsesses over becoming the best player in the world at a video game vs. someone who obsesses over becoming the best at anything. It's just sad that Vivi got so close to the top but still will leave his favorite game with such a fractured relationship.

I hope he can get his mind right and come back, so he can go out on better terms. I think we all have enjoyed watching him play, but many of us probably never realized he went through so much anguish from this game.

I mainly watch Mr.Yo and Lyx streaming, and sometimes watch vivi too. Last night i watched Lyx casting viv's game and Lyx saied it will be the last aoe2 game of vivi before the game. Lyx is always being very supportive to other Chinese aoe2 player and he knows what vivi has been through, because Lyx quit the team game tournament for the same reason.

The whole idea that your entire worth as a human being is determined by your job title and income is so appalling to me. What is wrong with simply wanting to do stuff that makes you happy? I will never understand this.

A lot of Chinese parents treat kids as an investment (You may google 養兒防老) for their later years. Skipping school + not getting a job might be an investment failure in their eyes.

vivi's uneducated play a big role in his failure,
if u compared with vivi and yo's streaming, yo never be such toxic as vivi, maybe because yo is highly educated, and yo's university is really good. if the chat be toxic to vivi, vivi will toxic back but yo don't, and this kind of stuff just weave a tangle web for everyone. he need to change, and practice more. despite lyx god like performance in the 2v2 world cup, he will still receive lots toxic from the chat, it's Chinese streaming community, there's no solution to this, so he do need to change himself!
but there's still merit, if u praise him in the chat, and u will get free guidance from vivi, it's fun.

To be fair, judging from the fact that his parents offered him a job at the wet market, i don't think his parents set an expectation of being a doctor o laywer.

What his parents wanted was probably just him finishing the compulsory education (9 years in china) so that he would have more options in making a living, if he can't live by playing aoe one day.

I think most if not all expert players are very smart. They can do well at school if they want to. Missing the school years early means one may lose many job opportunities forever.
